Self-Confidence Booster

I've used this book as a reference whenever I feel down and low on confidence. And so far, it hasn't disappointed me. Whenever I've lost motivation or faith, I've been inspired by the tips mentioned in it. The author packs a ton of useful information in a crisp and concise manner making his instructions easy to follow. Also, what is even more useful is that the book not only contains tips on improving self-confidence but also includes information about motivation, stress management etc. All in all, this is an effective guide for those in need of a little boost in self-confidence.

Practical advice for building your self confidence

I like the section in this book about dealing with perceived failure. The author provides a series of questions to ask yourself when you think you have failed, in order to reframe the experience. And to think of it as a video game where you have to play a few times before you can go onto the next level. There is also a good section on living up to your own standards - not values set by your parents or siblings or coworkers or anyone else, but standards that reflect values that you cherish. There are some real nuggets and practical advice here.

To be honest, I didn't know what to expect from this book. I never really thought I would be buying a book on "self-confidence secrets," but this one line sealed the deal:

"If you are lacking in self-confidence, you likely second guess yourself or are afraid to try something new because you don't think you can." This isn't a regular fluffy book on why its good to make yourself feel better...but rather, a more methodical approach to prevent your mind from DIVIDING itself into two different identities.

If you know what I'm talking about, this book is perfect for you!

Bradford Outstanding Educator Award, presented by the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, and has received international, national, and institutional awards for his research, teaching, and service. The book was okay, however, I needed the 3rd edition and this book is the 4th! Most chapters are the same but the additional reading at the end of the chapters is not all identical. Oh well.

Sometime during the last 30 years, the service economy emerged as the dominant engine of economic activity. At first, critics who were uncomfortable with the intangible nature of services bemoaned the decline of the goods-based economy, which, thanks to many factors, had increasingly become commoditized. Successful companies, such as Nordstrom, Starbucks, Saturn, and IBM, discovered that the best way to differentiate one product from another--clothes, food, cars, computers--was to add service.

But, according to Joseph Pine and James Gilmore, the bar of economic offerings is being raised again. In The Experience Economy, the authors argue that the service economy is about to be superseded with something that critics will find even more ephemeral (and controversial) than services ever were: experiences. In part because of technology and the increasing expectations of consumers, services today are starting to look like commodities. The authors write that "Those businesses that relegate themselves to the diminishing world of goods and services will be rendered irrelevant. To avoid this fate, you must learn to stage a rich, compelling experience."

This book scared the hell out me. The pitch is that consumers are increasing in complexity. They want everything from simple commodities to manufactured goods to what the authors call experiences – immersive, richly textured commercial events. And fast-paced business types better follow or they'll be left in the dust.

The patron saint here is Walt Disney: Coffee shops should focus on the coffee experience, the authors suggest, while restaurants need to realize that the music and the ambiance – eatertainment, as the authors label it – are as important as the food.

The book is well written and I liked its fanatical conviction. The authors cheerfully acknowledge that even the most sacred experiences can be turned into a fast buck for faster companies. (They point out that many Americans now seek advice not from their priests and religious leaders, but from paid "spiritual coaches.") I'd love to think this is an elaborate spoof on the absurdity of late-state capitalism, but I'm afraid Pine and Gilmore are absolutely serious when they conclude that "The Consumer Is the Product." God help us all.

Secret behind business success

A Harvard educated friend of mine told me about this book which created some interest, until I found out the most successful companies in the country were using this technique to rapidly expand their profitability. Then I couldn't wait to order it and find out for myself how these concepts applied to small business.

I wasn't disappointed and have recommended the book for years because even though it's a radical concept, it works. If you have ever wondered if price is the most important element in finding business success, this book will convince you otherwise. It's not about money- it's about the customers experience and when you know how to master this technique you will win customers for life along with word of mouth marketing that will be invaluable for your long term business success.

More Exciting Than it Sounds

With a title like "The Experience Economy" and a tagline that reads "Work is Theatre and Every Business a Stage," one would think this would be an exciting and daring book on innovative business strategies. Daring it most certainly is; the metaphor comparing work to theatre is adventurous and eye-opening. But it is also overdrawn, and is rooted too much in theory and not so much in practical example. Wow!!! Hitting the nail directly on the Head

Richard Parkhouse and Dr. Guy White have written the most down to earth, common sense, pull no punches text on what it takes to change or enhance the culture and climate of a/or all schools.
It's about ALL students, not just the Royal Family, Jocks, College bound etc. Schools are "family". What are we REALLY doing in Character Development, improving the drop out rate, low test scores, etc.?
If any of these areas need improvement in your school, READ AND DIGEST THIS BOOK.!!!!

A very inspiring, amazing book!!!!!!

There was many things that stood out to me while reading the "Building the World's Greatest High School". When I first started reading the book I thought it wasn't very interesting, I was like at the 4th page and I was thinking that it was another boring book. Then, I got to the Foreword and Chapter 1 and I actually began taking more interest in the book. After reading it for a while I got into the book because it was interesting, the things that it stated made sense and I could see it happening in high schools. One thing that I learned from the book was that "We are what we believe - what we believe unifies us", basically that our beliefs influence how our school does things. It's all about how we see things and what we believe and it reflects off your work. So if someone doesn't believe that our school is the best or that it sucks then they aren't going to do anything to show people otherwise. How I will contribute this to ASB is in the way that I believe that our school is one of the best but not many people see that because they don't want to see past what other people say. So by working as hard as I can and working with the rest of ASB we will show that our school is one of the best and it's something we are proud of, so by working hard every time we will be able to show that. Another thing that I learned from this book is value # 6 "Everything we do, we do with PRIDE." To me this is important because being part of ASB I think that we should do everything at the best of our ability so I think that it's important to show our pride in our school and in our program. The third thing I learned from this book was chapter five. I learned a lot from this chapter because although I knew that without teachers who would there be to teach us I never really thought that I could be a possible mentor to someone else. I really like the quote that was stated "No one gets anywhere without a mentor" because I analyzed that a lot and it's so true! There's always been a mentor for everything, well basically. I think that in ASB we could do a lot with this in a way we are mentors for each other because everyone has something different to teach. In ASB we could use this to help others discover what their talents, skills or values are, or simply helping someone set a goal and making sure they go through with it.

This book has changed the way I look at many things and not just how I look at Valley. I knew that there were a lot of different types of high schools but I never really thought of how different or in what way. The three different types of high schools described in the book made sense. It got me thinking of what kind of high school Valley is. It also made me look at teachers differently some have more things in common than others in just the way they talk to their students. One most important concept at Valley that I think everyone should be able to see is that ALL kids have a future. At Valley I don't think that some students realize their potential so they just kinda blow it off and act like they don't care. If we help students see that they all have a future and they are the ones who decide where they want to go with that I believe that our school would be one step closer to reaching its full potential. I just think that most students at Valley don't see what they are capable of. We could do many things to help Valley become the best it can be.

This is THE book for building the right culture on your campus

For years, I worked at improving the culture on our campus. I had made incremental gains in some areas, while missing on others. This book outlines what it takes to take your school from good to great. I have increased the number of students involved in my student government and together we are building our own World's Greatest High School. Parkhouse and White teach how to communicate that every child matters and that we in education do not get to pick and chose who gets a quality education. Every student matters and every student has a future. The also teach us that no student can be successful without a teacher/mentor. Don't get me wrong, our school has been highly successful with very high test schools and plenty of top-notch scholars that are attending prestigious colleges. Parkhouse and White though, show how even these successful schools need to rise up from their status quo to make every student successful. From conceptualization to marketing your new brand, these two authors have provided the impetus to for us to move to the forefront of education. The book had such an impact on myself, that I contacted my Jostens rep who provided Richard Parkhouse to come speak to my student leaders. He energized our kids and now they too want to build the World's Greatest High School.

Ask the Maya

If you want to know what the Ancient Maya said about 2012, why not ask one? Dr. Van Stone has examined virtually every piece of actual Mayan literature about this subject (and a few that are only tangentially relevant, but very entertaining). And he has come up with a readable, funny, intelligent conclusion, one simple enough for terrified high-schoolers who worry that they won't grow up, as well as the serious scholar. The several dozen essays are independent enough to read in any order, but exhaustively cross-referenced so they lead logically from one to another.

A noble translation attempt

I am not a French speaker, but studied the language for many years. We have a French au pair for our toddlers who love the original. It's not an easy book to translate but I think this is an excellent translation. The words make sense with the pictures. And to address the size issue, you can have your children look at the original book in English while reading it in French.

This paperback "pocket" edition is TINY.

great translation, too small for 1 year olds

This is a great translation - they really translated the spirit of Dr. Seuss. There's a good rhythm, lots of rhymes and word play, etc. I grew up with Dr. Seuss in English and this translation feels like Seuss to me. I've seen another version of Chat Chapeaute that translates the original literally and it is terrible! Completely misses the point of Dr. Seuss.
My only complaint is that this book is paperback and it is small - difficult for my nearly 2 year old to hold while I read. The only big hardback version of Chat Chapeaute I have found was the literal translation version which I don't think is worth buying at any price, so we'll have to get by with this.
