Wow!!! Hitting the nail directly on the Head

Richard Parkhouse and Dr. Guy White have written the most down to earth, common sense, pull no punches text on what it takes to change or enhance the culture and climate of a/or all schools.
It's about ALL students, not just the Royal Family, Jocks, College bound etc. Schools are "family". What are we REALLY doing in Character Development, improving the drop out rate, low test scores, etc.?
If any of these areas need improvement in your school, READ AND DIGEST THIS BOOK.!!!!

A very inspiring, amazing book!!!!!!

There was many things that stood out to me while reading the "Building the World's Greatest High School". When I first started reading the book I thought it wasn't very interesting, I was like at the 4th page and I was thinking that it was another boring book. Then, I got to the Foreword and Chapter 1 and I actually began taking more interest in the book. After reading it for a while I got into the book because it was interesting, the things that it stated made sense and I could see it happening in high schools. One thing that I learned from the book was that "We are what we believe - what we believe unifies us", basically that our beliefs influence how our school does things. It's all about how we see things and what we believe and it reflects off your work. So if someone doesn't believe that our school is the best or that it sucks then they aren't going to do anything to show people otherwise. How I will contribute this to ASB is in the way that I believe that our school is one of the best but not many people see that because they don't want to see past what other people say. So by working as hard as I can and working with the rest of ASB we will show that our school is one of the best and it's something we are proud of, so by working hard every time we will be able to show that. Another thing that I learned from this book is value # 6 "Everything we do, we do with PRIDE." To me this is important because being part of ASB I think that we should do everything at the best of our ability so I think that it's important to show our pride in our school and in our program. The third thing I learned from this book was chapter five. I learned a lot from this chapter because although I knew that without teachers who would there be to teach us I never really thought that I could be a possible mentor to someone else. I really like the quote that was stated "No one gets anywhere without a mentor" because I analyzed that a lot and it's so true! There's always been a mentor for everything, well basically. I think that in ASB we could do a lot with this in a way we are mentors for each other because everyone has something different to teach. In ASB we could use this to help others discover what their talents, skills or values are, or simply helping someone set a goal and making sure they go through with it.

This book has changed the way I look at many things and not just how I look at Valley. I knew that there were a lot of different types of high schools but I never really thought of how different or in what way. The three different types of high schools described in the book made sense. It got me thinking of what kind of high school Valley is. It also made me look at teachers differently some have more things in common than others in just the way they talk to their students. One most important concept at Valley that I think everyone should be able to see is that ALL kids have a future. At Valley I don't think that some students realize their potential so they just kinda blow it off and act like they don't care. If we help students see that they all have a future and they are the ones who decide where they want to go with that I believe that our school would be one step closer to reaching its full potential. I just think that most students at Valley don't see what they are capable of. We could do many things to help Valley become the best it can be.

This is THE book for building the right culture on your campus

For years, I worked at improving the culture on our campus. I had made incremental gains in some areas, while missing on others. This book outlines what it takes to take your school from good to great. I have increased the number of students involved in my student government and together we are building our own World's Greatest High School. Parkhouse and White teach how to communicate that every child matters and that we in education do not get to pick and chose who gets a quality education. Every student matters and every student has a future. The also teach us that no student can be successful without a teacher/mentor. Don't get me wrong, our school has been highly successful with very high test schools and plenty of top-notch scholars that are attending prestigious colleges. Parkhouse and White though, show how even these successful schools need to rise up from their status quo to make every student successful. From conceptualization to marketing your new brand, these two authors have provided the impetus to for us to move to the forefront of education. The book had such an impact on myself, that I contacted my Jostens rep who provided Richard Parkhouse to come speak to my student leaders. He energized our kids and now they too want to build the World's Greatest High School.
