Lucid and rigorous

I am not a trained analytic philosopher, so I may not be fully equipped to evaluate the book's merit vis a vis the scholarly debates in which it intervenes. But I am a professor in the humanities, in a field in which aesthetic analysis is pertinent, and more broadly, in which protocols of conceptual inquiry and analysis remain a relevant concern (at least to some). What strikes me about Davies's work is its extraordinary cogency, straightforwardness, and depth. It represents a model of lucid exposition, utterly free of the obfuscation, puffery, pedantry, buzz-word trendiness, vacuous "theory," and rhetorical posturing that so often passes for serious scholarship in the humanities. Graduate students in numerous disciplines would benefit from exposure to it as an example of what true scholarship looks like.
