UFOs and the National Security State: Chronology of a Coverup, 1941-1973, by Richard M. Dolan

Richard M. Dolan is a gifted historian whose study of U.S. Cold War strategy led him to the broader context of increased security measures and secrecy since World War II. One aspect of such government policies that has continued to hold the public's imagination for over half a century is the question of unidentified flying objects.

UFOs and the National Security State is the first volume of a two-part detailed chronological narrative of the national security dimensions of the UFO phenomenon from 1941 to the present. Working from hundreds of declassified records and other primary and secondary sources, Dolan centers his investigation on the American military and intelligence communities, demonstrating that they take UFOs seriously indeed.

Included in this volume are the activities of more than fifty military bases relating to UFOs, innumerable violations of sensitive airspace by unknown craft and analyses of the Roswell controversy, the CIA-sponsored Robertson Panel, and the Condon Committee Report. Dolan highlights the development of civilian anti-secrecy movements, which flourished in the 1950s and 1960s until the adoption of an official government policy and subsequent "closing of the door" during the Nixon administration.

The best UFO book of the year. -- Dr. Bob Hieronimus, 21st Century Radio

The best history ever written about UFOs. Richard Dolan is the leading UFO historian in the world right now. -- Whitley Strieber, author of Communion

The best history of the UFO phenomenon in one volume that I have ever read. -- Loy Lawhon, UFO researcher and columnist

This is a thorough and monumental undertaking. I applaud your effort. -- Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 Astronaut

This is an inspiration. Prior to reading the book, I would have considered myself quite skeptical. However, at certain points I couldn't stop reading, even though circumstances said I should. -- John Belluardo, New York, NY

From the Publisher
This book is a unique acheivement in the field of UFO scholarship. Based on research of hundreds of official and fully documented sources, Richard Dolan has presented an astonishing level of detail, sophistication, and clarity to a topic all-too-frequently dismissed as an adjunct of pop culture.

From the Author
When I set out to write this book, I had no idea that it would be over 500 pages, but am pleased with how it has turned out. While undertaking my project, it became clear to me just how necessary this book is. Unlikely though it may seem, you cannot find any other book that provides the crucial foundation everyone needs: a clear, comprehensive, but concise historical narrative of the problem. This is exactly what I have tried to do. In addition, I have worked hard to make this book a good read. I expended much time and effort into gaining my reader's interest, and am pleased to announce that my early readers all seem to agree that my book is a page-turner. This is important to me: I want this book to be as easy to use as possible.

I have been encouraged by the extremely positive response from my readers, starting from well before the book's publication. I fully expected this book to generate good feedback. What I did not expect was the intensity of this response. The information in the book, combined with its manner of presentation, seems to have struck a resonant chord with many readers in a way that has exceeded my best expectations.

I am currently working on this study's second volume, which will take the story through the remainder of the 20th century.

A Thorough, Cogent, and Highly Detailed Account Into The Realm Of UFOlogy
By ZyPhReX
Over the last decade or so, Richard Dolan has become the unofficial historian of UFOlogy, and with good reason. Dolan, in his usual no-nonsense, methodical and rational approach has brought credibility to UFOlogy, which at times is a topic that can leave one’s head spinning.

In his second volume in this series Dolan also coined the term ‘Breakaway Civilization’, which also dovetails trenchantly with this analysis.

UFOs & The National Security State –Chronology Of A Cover Up [Volume 1] by Richard Dolan brings forth a substantial effort in chronicling many of the most notable Unidentified Flying Object sighting in modern history [1941-1973].

A most comprehensive/compelling dissertation of the dilemma humanity is facing within our skies is carried out in this book, and the fact that Dolan carries it out in an objective manner is not something to be taken lightly.

Dolan does an exemplary job in detailing not only the cover up of one of the greatest secrets of human history, but he has also centers his sights on the National Security Apparatus as well as the Military Industrial Complex, both of which have played a monumental role in creating this reality matrix that has been carefully manifested around us.

Furthermore, showing his attention to detail and nuts and bolt approach, Dolan is meticulous in footnoting all sources. This is quite appreciated, because in the arena of ufology, where it’s tough to find tangible evidence – it is one of the biggest covers up after all – it’s great to have someone who’s willing to stick to documentation rather than ‘insider testimony’. Not saying the latter doesn’t matter, but, it’s quite overdone in many circles and this is a much-needed common sense approach.

Coupled with the above, the author also brings forth of the issues of UFO sightings near nuclear facilities. This in it of itself should be highly disturbing, because regardless if you think there are others out there, the simple fact that there is someone technologically advanced enough not only to penetrate the airspace of the United States and its military, but to do so with impunity, in what should be the most secure facilities on the planet [Nuclear weapons are the most powerful weapons on Earth, on paper, after all, aren’t they?] is HIGHLY DISTURBING. The fact that it’s covered up is even more so.

But there is far, far more.

Dolan examines the high strangeness in abductions, cattle mutilations and the like, but also examines much of the disinformation and psychological operations that are carried out by the governments in order to downplay, and ridicule this issue.

This book sets out to lay the foundation for what will undoubtedly be one of the most pressing issues mankind faces right at this moment.

There is nothing else out there even remotely close to this book in this field, except the works of Dr. McDonald and the work of Major Donald Keyhoe. Both have done a rather incisive job in carrying out similar work as Dolan.

Dolan’s nod to the old school researchers is definitely a classy gesture, and shows the nature of the man and the respect he shows those in his field.

If you want credibility, a thoughtful, cogent examination of an issue that has plagued us at least – at minimum – for the last few decades and will continue to affect us thorough the rest of our history, this book is definitely for you.

Everyone should read this book. Regardless of what you believe, it should be your civic duty and responsibility to be informed in this groundbreaking and thought-provoking issue, because eventually we will face it head on, whether the comptrollers want us or not.

Kindest Regards,
Zy Marquiez

A pragmatic, meticulous study of a remarkable subject
By Harry Topalian
The phenomena is persistent, intriguing, fleeting, and revolutionary. Dolan has soberly, with a dry wit, chronicled the slippery appearances of this activity, that became highly pronounced in the late 1940s. More importantly, he's detailed the heavy involvement of governing bodies, military, and commercial professionals who have seen and interacted with whatever this may be.

Of the utmost importance is how the powers that be have handled this subject. During the 40s-50s it was a somewhat open topic- there was discussion about these puzzling things in the sky, or sea. Dolan has constructed a clear narrative, with a legit paper trail, that shows how this subject was treated with great concern by particularly the US government and military. Some of official investigations led to claims of something astounding as the source of UFOs. Then a clamp down began whereby the subject was marginalized, fake or surface level "studies" like the notorious Blue Book were conducted and the subject was made into a joke, a thing of pop-culture, and a career-killer.

Even after the subject was closed, Dolan shows that were was still government interest in the subject--jets chasing strange objects that can run circles around them, alarm when "swamp gas" fiddles with our nukes and so on. Most of the reviewers on here clearly make similar points, and the evidence is so blunt and simple, it's really astounding the material remains on the fringe. Part of that is likely due to the infrequent appearances of whatever is behind UFOs. It's easy to not feel pressured to pay attention. Denial can never be underestimated. For some, like myself, the possibilities are fascinating, and even though some of stories about who or what is behind UFOs is scary, I'm in to find out. Others don't want to think about it. It's too far out there and there's so much to pay attention to that demands our attention. It makes sense the government doesn't want to admit something way beyond their ability to mange is popping in and out of our sensitive airspace and they can't do diddly.

Debunkers love to ask why 'they' don't just land on the White House lawn. The irony being that they almost did in 1952 and the details of that, with radar returns and military witnesses has fallen on deaf ears. So, if something wildly dramatic and unavoidable happens, I highly recommend people who scramble to find a good source of education to buy this book.

Great intro for skeptic
By Robert Blakey
First, let me say that before this book I have read maybe 4 books in 10 years on UFO's. This strength of this book is convincing a skeptic that taking a look at the phenomenon is worth the time. This is achieved by showing that the U.S. Military, Intelligence agencies, and FBI took it very seriously. It goes on to trace the burying of the UFO phenomenon deeper into the dark recesses of the National Security State. If you read this book you can expect a brief overview of some of the better cases in the time period, and the inner workings of government agencies dealing with the problem. Fortunately you will NOT be subject to any new age nonsense. I liked it well enough that I bought the second volume (1973-1991) while I was still halfway through this first volume.
If you consider yourself an expert Ufologist, then you may think the book elementary, but it is a good reference nonetheless.
If you buy it, do yourself a favor and make notes as you go, there are a lot of acronyms and names of people you may not have heard of before. I am rereading and doing this while I wait for the 2nd volume.
My only reservation is the inclusion of some documents whose origins are dubious. He states this upfront, but with the wealth of verfied data out there I had to knock it one star.
