Exodus, by Brian Wildsmith

his is the story of how one man led his people out of slavery to a land that God had promised to give them. His name was Moses.

With vivid, richly detailed illustrations, Brian Wildsmith captures all the major events of one of the greatest stories in the Bible. The story of the Exodus and the rescue of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt is a powerful and exciting tale which attests that God’s guiding hand is always evident.

In Wildsmith’s hands, this familiar journey comes alive against stunning backdrops―from the great palaces of ancient Egypt, to the vast expanses of Sinai’s mountains and wilderness, to the peaceful place God’s people can finally call home.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-Wildsmith recounts Moses's saga from his rescue in the bulrushes by Pharaoh's daughter to his death on Mt. Nebo overlooking the Promised Land. The writing is straightforward and simple; the story is brief but accurate. The artwork is a visual feast. The double-page illustrations, framed in gold, are panoramas of activity, crowded with the figures of the Hebrew multitudes suffering in slavery, streaming out of Egypt, traversing the Red Sea between walls of water, wandering in the brown hills of the desert, and at last, triumphantly entering the verdant Canaan. Filled with meticulous and decorative detail, glowing with rich colors, and arranged to maximize dramatic impact, the paintings show the awesome events with excitement and beauty. The pillars of cloud and fire are shaped like huge pointing fingers. Animals, birds, and sea life abound. God's presence is shown by a multicolored, starry shape superimposed on a sphere. The endpapers present the Ten Commandments printed on monumental, gold-decorated arks against a background of intense violet and rose. Even if your library has Leonard Everett Fisher's excellent Moses (1995) or Miriam Chaikin's Exodus (1987, both Holiday), powerfully illustrated by Charles Mikolaycak, this new book should be included.

Magnificent artwork
By Joan K. Snipes
This picture book is a very good choice for parents who want their children to become familiar with Moses, Egypt, and the exodus. The illustrations are well done. I especially like Wildsmith's illustrations of the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire guiding the Hebrews day and night. The wording of the commandments on the end pages varies from the familiar King James Bible. For example: Wildsmith's says: "You must not steal" instead of "Thou shalt not steal."

"...vivid, richly detailed illustrations, Bill Wildsmith ...
By Barbara Stienstra
...captures all the major events of this powerful and exciting tale..." as stated on the dust jacket of this gorgeous book! The gold leaf is striking. The illustrations are just beautiful! I have been in the library business for over 26 years, and I can not recall such a (and I hesitate to use this word but it sure does suit the description) "pretty" book! My husband and I have been to Egypt and the drawings wonderfully illustrate the splendor and glory of this land rich with history. For our library summer program of ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS and THEIR CULTURES, I used this book to show just how the temples originally looked decorated in all those array of colours. It is so detailed, one surely can appreciate the time and effort that went into creating such a masterpiece! I ordered this book for our Children's Room Library back in February and as to date, 26 times it has been used. I am ordering more copies as it sure will come in handy during the high holy days in September!
One surely can appreciate the time and effort that went into creating such a masterpiece which captures the splendor and glory of this powerful tale!

Visually appealing introduction to Moses & the Exodus
By X. Libris
While this 32 page condensation of the story of Moses and the Exodus gleaned from the latter chapters of the book of Genesis and the entire book of Exodus in the Bible is rather dry and matter-of-fact, it serves as a good framework for award-winning children's book illustrator, Brian Wildsmith, to interpret key scenes and events from the biblical account with his distinctive pen and watercolor paintings.
Let this colorful book serve as a visually appealing introduction for your children to the rich and more compelling account found in the Bible, as well as other children's Bible storybooks. The text of the Ten Commandments can be found on the endpapers of this gilded book, depicted on the side of Wildsmith's illustration of the Ark of the Covenant.
Be sure to check out Brian Wildsmith's companion book, "Joseph."
