Wilde Card: Immortal Vegas, Book 2, by Jenn Stark

All that glitters may not be gold.

When an antique gold show comes to Vegas, artifact-hunter Sara Wilde's job is simple: to locate and liberate a set of relics rumored to give their bearers access to an ancient, incredible power. Yet within the Connected community, whispers of a war against magic draw every psychic, mystic, warlock, and witch to Sin City. The most powerful Connected also covet the infamous relics, but no one wants them more than Sara's client--the insufferably arrogant, criminally sensual, and endlessly evasive Magician.

And what the Magician wants...

Sara's heist takes a turn for the trickier as the smoky-eyed specter from her past, Detective Brody Rooks, is assigned to investigate a break-in at the gold show, forcing her to confront the one man in Vegas she can't bluff. Even worse, just as she finally gets her hands on the goods, the game changes anew. The resulting chase leads her across the world to an ancient Egyptian temple filled with secrets, deception... and hints about her own abilities that could change everything. Desperate for answers, Sara is forced to turn to the one person she knows will manipulate, obfuscate and beguile to get whatever he craves. Only now, it seems, the Magician wants her.

Sometimes, when the deck is stacked against you... you've got to play the Wilde Card.

Second in series
By E.P. McLean
Remains an uneven series. Sara is an interesting person facing potential war in Las Vegas between the magic community and forces of religious secret societies. Her adventures looking for magical objects is well done, but her love life is very badly written with little logic or sense. Plot is similar to other series out there today with little originality. Pleasent read if your expectations are not too high.

Wlide Card

After figuring out the Connected are under threat from a group called SANCTUS, Sara Wilde and those in the Arcane Council are anticipating an attack to come sooner rather than later. Sara, for her part, is taking on more jobs, earning more money and trying to help Father Jerome house the ever increasing Connected that come to him for safe haven. These jobs also keep Sara out of Vegas, which is a big check in the plus column.

But with her oracular obligations to the High Priestess and at the constant nagging of Armaeus Bertrand (aka The Magician), her respite is short-lived. When she does return, Sara is put in the service of the Council once again. This time it’s acquiring a set of scrolls that will be featured at an upcoming antiquities gala. These scrolls are thought to contain unimaginable power, and will certainly help with the fight against SANCTUS. Now, if only blast-from-her-past Detective Brody Rooks wasn’t watching Sara’s every move, maybe this job would go off without a hitch.

Getting Wilde was a great surprise to me when it was released a few months ago. Wilde Card continues on in the same vein, only I think being familiar with the characters and setting, and knowing what to expect with Sara’s often zany antics makes this one a better read.

There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding Sara’s power, and I’m ok with not getting the answers right away. I enjoyed seeing new things unfold, but I suppose the caveat with that is when all is finally revealed it better be spectacular—and with the way things have gone in these first two books, I have no fear that Jenn Stark will deliver.

Surprisingly, I’m also not turned-off by the potential love triangle between Sara, Armaeus and Brody. It’s amped up in Wilde Card due to the fact that Brody and Sara reunited later on in Getting Wilde. Like Sara’s feelings for The Magician, she doesn’t really know what game Brody is playing. She’s smart enough to know that some of the emotions she feels towards him resonate from the crush she harbored when they worked together years ago. I like the history between them, but there’s still no denying the chemistry between Sara and Armaeus.

I’m happy to report that, while still retaining his mysteriousness, Sara and Armaeus spend a lot more time together in this book, and despite her protestations about his controlling ways, it’s clear she feels something for him. What exactly that ‘something’ is, I suppose time will tell.

Jenn Stark introduced a couple other members of the Arcane Council: The Empress (Roxie) and The Fool (Simon). Simon was by far my favorite addition. He’s somewhat new to his role of The Fool and it was nice to see a Council member who wasn’t all omnipresent and was still getting to know the ins and outs of his own powers. It brought out a more humane side to the Council.

If you haven’t checked this series out yet, I highly recommend it. Anyone who likes a strong, wise-cracking heroine and some delicious chemistry will find a lot to love about this series.

Wow I think I've got whip lash!
By Marta Cox
Sara Wilde is a bit of a conundrum really. As part of the Connected community she has the incredible ability to use the tarot cards in order to locate lost or hidden items but she's a heroine with secrets. In the previous book she became even more entwined with the world of the Arcana council and is now in a very difficult position of desperately wanting to leave Vegas whilst knowing the council seem to have her right where they want her. Sara is determined to help save those like herself survive and will take any job she can but when will those with real power take a stance and help? There's something off though, something flickering at the back of Sara's mind and her latest job puts her right in the firing line. Her first love is in town, someone is desperate to awaken something older than dirt and then of course there's Armaeus the Magician a born trickster with an agenda of his own! Sara might know how to handle the cards but what can she do when the deck is so heavily stacked against her?
Wilde is an appropriate name here because as usual the author takes her readers on a truly wild ride. From the first scene in Siberia to the crazy streets of Vegas it's so fast I'm surprised I didn't get whiplash! Sara might be talented but she is constantly at the mercy of those who should be helping and yet always seem determined to muddy the waters. Nothing is easy or straight forward and it's a complex story line so definitely a series to read in order. Interesting supporting characters that the reader needs to pay attention to but most of all a nonstop series of adventures that pull the reader in . With this book we are starting to see a whole new side to Sara as things from her past are encroaching on her present. The Arcana council have a bigger presence too but if you're expecting romance well this instalment ends in a way that really tantalizes. No nothing is ever easy for Sara and this reader wouldn't have it any other way!
