"Nigella Lawson's How to Eat is one of my favourite cookbooks of all time. And with Simply Nigella she has written an equal to her great work, a wonderful volume containing page after page of things you actually want to cook. Who could resists oxtail on toast, Malaysian red-cooked chicken and smoky salted caramel sauce? It's a cookbook to adore, the sort that will become cracked and stained with constant loving use."

These books and her television series have made her a household name around the world. She was a mentor on ABC's The Taste, and her books have sold more than eight million copies.

Beautiful as always, but could use a little more content

First let me say, as I will never get the pleasure of telling her in person, how great it is that Nigella has moved on to a new home and is embracing her "Temple Food" even further with these Asian and Moroccan-inspired dishes. While I think she is (well, must be...) as strong and inspiring as she is beautiful, the book lacks the substantive content of predecessors like "Feast", "How To Eat", and "Express" (I'd like more of your writing if not recipes, and fewer or smaller food pics) that could have occupied some space from the many photographs. Still, she is Nigella, and so I had to buy it and use it as I have her nine other books that are as enjoyable to read- she really is a very engaging writer- as they are to cook from. Here she is clearly evolving from not just providing comfort to others but sharing what has been good for her these last couple of challenging years, and we are better for it Nigella has carried on Julia Child's message of enjoying food and its preparation, and deserves respect for that....not just for her magnetic charm and goddess exterior.

Great book, NIgella breaks all of her recipes down into easily understood chunks. I've already started making shopping lists...

Lots of soothing, comforting dishes, generally easy-to-make

With some authors, you don't need to look past the front cover. Any new book from that person goes right into the pre-order queue. Nigella's cookbooks have been in that category for me for... eek, a decade already?! because they're reliably tasty, non-obvious recipes that are simple enough for midweek cooking -- and her writing is a pleasure to read. Her latest, Simply Nigella, gives me no reason to revise my opinion.

Some of Nigella's cookbooks have themes, such as holiday cooking or Italian-inspired. Simply Nigella likely could be summarized as "comfort food," in the sense of "dishes that help you slow down, unwind, restore-oneself, and appreciate life a little more." Her own life, for the past couple of years, certainly has demonstrated a need for this... and among the many things I admire about the woman is her ability to impart that Finding-Comfort to others. (So hey, thanks lady.)

But you could ignore all that and just get down to the recipes.

I've made a few things so far, and have little stickies marking quite a few more dishes. I began with a solo supper of "feta and avocado salad with red onions, pomegranate, and [I left these out because they hid on my spice shelf:] nigella seeds," which was tasty -- not OMG YOU MUST EAT THIS but only a few minutes to throw together. I also made her super-easy "chicken traybake with bitter orange and fennel." You throw the chicken into an easy marinade, then dump it in a pan in the oven while you work on something more important (say, Facebook status updates). It was yummy and gave me a few days of leftovers (though next time I'll chunk the fennel into smaller pieces).

The OH WOW dinner so far, however, was her Indian-spiced Shepherd's pie. That's not an easy-throw-together dinner; it's the sort that requires a little time puttering in the kitchen, but oh SO worth it. The topping is made from sweet potatoes (with lime and cardamom and ginger); the filling is lamb (I used beef), ginger, garlic, onion, tomatoes, red lentils, and a warming set of spices (cardamom, cumin, garam masala, etc.). I'll be making this dish many more times!

Among the dishes marked for "make this soon:" Brazilian cheese bread (it uses tapioca flour, so it's okay on my mostly-paleo diet); date and marmalade Christmas cake (which uses almonds, no wheat flour); roasted radishes; slow-cooker chickpeas with cumin and spinach; oven-cooked chicken shawarma.

In short: Yum. Yes, of course you need this cookbook!
