good prevails.

Life in post-revolutionary Russia was no picnic with mass starvation and lawlessness. This book focuses on a guy who is trying to get the cement factory working again but finds himself fighting one committee after another and their role seems to be only to throw up roadblocks. There is much sadness but in the end, good prevails.

Paradigm of Socialist Realism

In Cement, a classic of socialist realism and an exemplar of the production novel, Fyodor Gladkov portrays the sociological effects of Communism on the inhabitants of a mountain town after the Russian Revolution as they attempt to rebuild their lives under the new economic policies of the Soviet Union. Written to a master plot that controls the most critical elements of the story, the novel illustrates major tenets of Soviet ideology. Task fulfillment is combined with the maturation of the positive hero as he transcends his selfish interests and finds self-fulfillment in the collective cause of Communism. Gleb Chumalov, having distinguished himself in Civil War battles, returns home to discover things have changed dramatically. The cement factory is idle, petit bourgeois values remain, and the local officials are not committed to a reopening of the factory. Moreover, his wife, Dasha, is now the leader of the local Women's Section of the Communist Party, and has no interest in continuing their marriage. Chumalov perceives that the battle for communist survival must now be fought on the economic front and he redirects his energies to accomplish this task. Overcoming worker apathy, red tape, and sabotage, Chumalov mobilizes the proletariat, challenges the bureaucrats, and succeeds in achieving the reopening of the factory on the fourth anniversary of the October Revolution. In a speech marking the completion of the task, Chumalov envisions a wonderful life for future generations under communism. In further development of the motif that sacrifice will lead to a common good, Serge contemplates life after his purge from the Communist Party because of his Menshevik ties: " he, Serge Ivagin, as a personality did not exist. There was only the Party and he was an insignificant item in this great organism."[1]

Katerina Clark suggests that although Cement, in many ways, exemplifies the prototypical Soviet production novel, largely due to the fact that its plot and positive heroes were imitated more than any other in Soviet fiction, especially in the 1940s when Gladkov was director of the Literary Institute, it is better viewed as an embryonic form of such novels. She concedes that Cement, written in 1925 before Stalin's rise to power, did indeed include much Pravda rhetoric, especially the theme that the fight for communist survival must be redirected to the economic front. She argues, however, that unlike the conventional socialist realist novel, Gladkov uses language and imagery of several nonpartisan highbrow literary schools of thought. Gladkov's opulent prose was repeatedly criticized, and he rewrote the novel several times in response to his critics. Notwithstanding the alterations, the hero image he projected in Gleb Chumalov remained in tact, and became a convention for later Soviet realist novels. In Clark's view, Cement demonstrates that Stalinist culture was influenced by a variety of preexisting elements and was not something that was handed down solely by the dictator himself.[2]

Sex, love, and Bolshevism

The 1920s was a great decade for Soviet literature: the works published during this era are thematically- and ideologically-diverse. Yes, there are better-written novels that came out during this period. Nevertheless, Gladkov's Cement is under-rated. I find it fun to read and re-read (which is critical, since I end up teaching it a lot) and it's definitively one of the best vehicles for getting at the tensions that plagued the Bolsheviks in the early years. Pairing this with Abram Room's film, Bed and Sofa, is a great way to address questions of gender in the early Soviet Union.

Who could resists oxtail on toast, Malaysian red-cooked chicken and smoky salted caramel sauce? It's a cookbook to adore, the sort that will become cracked and stained with constant loving use."

Beautiful as always, but could use a little more content

First let me say, as I will never get the pleasure of telling her in person, how great it is that Nigella has moved on to a new home and is embracing her "Temple Food" even further with these Asian and Moroccan-inspired dishes. While I think she is (well, must be...) as strong and inspiring as she is beautiful, the book lacks the substantive content of predecessors like "Feast", "How To Eat", and "Express" (I'd like more of your writing if not recipes, and fewer or smaller food pics) that could have occupied some space from the many photographs. Still, she is Nigella, and so I had to buy it and use it as I have her nine other books that are as enjoyable to read- she really is a very engaging writer- as they are to cook from. Here she is clearly evolving from not just providing comfort to others but sharing what has been good for her these last couple of challenging years, and we are better for it Nigella has carried on Julia Child's message of enjoying food and its preparation, and deserves respect for that....not just for her magnetic charm and goddess exterior.

Lots of soothing, comforting dishes, generally easy-to-make

With some authors, you don't need to look past the front cover. Any new book from that person goes right into the pre-order queue. Nigella's cookbooks have been in that category for me for... eek, a decade already?! because they're reliably tasty, non-obvious recipes that are simple enough for midweek cooking -- and her writing is a pleasure to read. Her latest, Simply Nigella, gives me no reason to revise my opinion.

Some of Nigella's cookbooks have themes, such as holiday cooking or Italian-inspired. Simply Nigella likely could be summarized as "comfort food," in the sense of "dishes that help you slow down, unwind, restore-oneself, and appreciate life a little more." Her own life, for the past couple of years, certainly has demonstrated a need for this... and among the many things I admire about the woman is her ability to impart that Finding-Comfort to others. (So hey, thanks lady.)

But you could ignore all that and just get down to the recipes.

I've made a few things so far, and have little stickies marking quite a few more dishes. I began with a solo supper of "feta and avocado salad with red onions, pomegranate, and [I left these out because they hid on my spice shelf:] nigella seeds," which was tasty -- not OMG YOU MUST EAT THIS but only a few minutes to throw together. I also made her super-easy "chicken traybake with bitter orange and fennel." You throw the chicken into an easy marinade, then dump it in a pan in the oven while you work on something more important (say, Facebook status updates). It was yummy and gave me a few days of leftovers (though next time I'll chunk the fennel into smaller pieces).

The OH WOW dinner so far, however, was her Indian-spiced Shepherd's pie. That's not an easy-throw-together dinner; it's the sort that requires a little time puttering in the kitchen, but oh SO worth it. The topping is made from sweet potatoes (with lime and cardamom and ginger); the filling is lamb (I used beef), ginger, garlic, onion, tomatoes, red lentils, and a warming set of spices (cardamom, cumin, garam masala, etc.). I'll be making this dish many more times!

Among the dishes marked for "make this soon:" Brazilian cheese bread (it uses tapioca flour, so it's okay on my mostly-paleo diet); date and marmalade Christmas cake (which uses almonds, no wheat flour); roasted radishes; slow-cooker chickpeas with cumin and spinach; oven-cooked chicken shawarma.

In short: Yum. Yes, of course you need this cookbook!

The book traces the origins of 8 songs released on the second posthumous album Xscape - namely "Love Never Felt So Good," "Loving You," "Chicago" (originally titled "She Was Loving Me"), "A Place With No Name,' "Slave To The Rhythm," "Do You Know Where Your Children Are," "Blue Gangsta" and "Xscape" - and provides a much-needed context for the album. The foreword is written by Jackson's long-time engineer Matt Forger.

Besides sharing the story of each song, through the words of Michael Jackson’s collaborators, the book paints a vivid picture of Michael’s artistic side and his modus operandi in a recording studio.

Nearly every person quoted in the book mentions how much they were affected by the experience of working with Michael Jackson. Many of them were accomplished artists and producers in their own right, and yet they speak of him almost with reverence and treat the opportunity they were given as the greatest blessing of their lives. The excitement in their words when they describe the recording sessions is contagious. Some of the recollections (“His tone is insane, dude. Insane!”) give you goosebumps.

You also get a sense of how demanding Michael was with producers and musicians and how high a bar he set for them – and himself. Chapter “Xscape” offers an exciting glimpse into the chemistry between Michael, Cory Rooney and Rodney Jerkins when the latter just joined the Invincible project. The chapter tells the story of how Michael initially expressed doubt in Rodney’s abilities and Rodney set out to prove himself – with such fervor that he locked himself in the studio for weeks and worked with his team in three shifts around the clock to deliver music Michael would accept. Such was the desire of Michael’s producers to attain to the level of his quality standard.

Chapter “Do You Know Where Your Children Are” is another one that stands out because it touches on social themes in Michael’s work. In MJ’s official discography, these themes became prominent with the Dangerous album (Bad, of course, had “Man In The Mirror,” but that song wasn’t written by Michael). Yet, as Damien Shields argues in “Xscape Origins,” Michael really started focusing on these subjects back in the Bad era, with songs like “Do You Know Where Your Children Are,” “Abortion Papers” and a few others that ultimately didn’t make the cut. In that period, when he was thought of by many as being “out of touch with reality” and living in a fantasy land, Michael was actually very much attuned to social problems.

Another prominent theme highlighted throughout the book is Michael’s never-ceasing zeal for knowledge, for absorbing lessons of history and using them to achieve greater goals. The narration makes a wonderful loop, starting from the words of Michael’s manager Ron Weisner in the first chapter describing Michael’s work ethics in the late 70s when he watched the great performers of the past with the intention to “out-work, out-study and out-think anyone he perceived as a competitor” and ending with an observation by Rodney Jerkins of Michael doing the same 20 years later because “You never stop studying the greats.”

Michael became proficient in learning from the greats. And being an accomplished artist himself, perhaps he envisioned that one day, future generations will be studying his creative process in the same way and be similarly inspired by it. As Matt Forger beautifully says in the foreword, Michael “loved storytelling and would want the story to be told.” And, thanks to researchers like Damien Shields, we now have an opportunity to hear the story and learn from it.

Excellent Read

My thanks to Damien Shields for an insightful and comprehensive analysis of the history and creative process of Michael Jackson and his collaborators for the songs released on the posthumous release, "Xscape." I, for one, always gravitate to Michael's original concept and emotional delivery and am little enamored with "remixes" which is, in reality, all the "contemporized" versions are. In some cases, the remix changes the entire sonic field and emotional and social consciousness factor of Jackson's original intent and in one, even the title of the song was changed. Why mess with perfection? Mr. Shields' treatment of the matter is eye opening and refreshing and makes me appreciate even more the inclusion of Michael's demos on the "deluxe" edition (of which I bought three copies ... hang the expense)! My thanks also to Mr. Forger and the host of collaborators Mr. Shields interviewed. An interesting and veey enjoyable read.

The incredibly detailed and thoroughly investigative account that Damien Shields delivers had me feeling like I was in the recording studio with Michael Jackson himself. Every song has been meticulously researched to provide a sense of working with the King of Pop through his humble and quirky creative process, whilst remaining a strong factual narrative about the origins of Xscape. Damien Shields manages to combine his strong journalistic skills with a wonderfully written story that gives a much too short insight into Michael’s love for producing art. This vivid and memorable examination will leave you lusting for more.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its Ninth edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

In January 2012, Florida Gulf Coast University named a new health professions facility “Dr. Elaine Nicpon Marieb Hall.” With the help of Dr. Marieb’s generous donation, this facility contains laboratories in the School of Nursing that simulate an operating room, intensive-care unit, a labor and delivery room, and general medical surgical suites. She has also established a scholarship endowment for non-traditional students in the health professions, and an endowment to enhance the activities of faculty, students, and staff within health professions to support education, research, and community outreach.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology � CD-ROM series.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society (HAPS), where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

Lori A. Smith received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department.� Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. Dr. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

This book matches the paper book pages exactly. It is easy to navigate through the manual.

It is nice not to have to carry around the cumbersome lab manual, but the Ebook is not interactive. I have to write all of my homework on a separate sheet of paper and cannot label the photos unless I draw them.

I bought the kindle version because it was a lot cheaper, but I definitely regret it because it has caused me so much more work and stress for class.

I would not recommend the kindle version of this book to someone who needs to write on the lab manual pages.

SELLER IS A LIFE SAVER!

I am a student and needed this book for school, so I purchased it through this seller. I later received an email saying I did not need the book so the seller allowed me to return the book with FREE SHIPPING! Then, when I had my first class my professor had changed and he wanted us to have the book for lab, so I ended up needing it, when i contacted the seller, he sent it back to me when he received it with NO CHARGE. Book was also in awesome condition, no marks and still in plastic wrapping!

great lab manual

I got this e-book and put it on my iPad and I love it. Nobody in my class will bring the lab book to class, but I always bring it on my tablet - since it weights almost nothing. The manual is huge (~1,000 pages) but so far I am pleased with the content.

Great choice for the intellectually curious!

I am really amazed that a book can excite an adult practicing scientist and still manage to capture the attention of non scientists everywhere! The authors have done an amazing job. They take us on an adventurous trip into the extremes of the universe, with self-contained sections complete with photos and explanations. One can "read around" or sit down and read from beginning to end. The reader is assumed to be somewhat educated and definitely curious, but the authors fill in where we are lacking. They investigate the extremes in physical places in the universe as well as extreme events in time and historical happenings. The photos are amazing (and plentiful). Although the book is clearly stimulating for an adult audience, it would also be a great gift for an intellectually curious and talented older child. I have not seen a book this exciting in a good few years, and I highly recommend it for your own pleasure, as well as for potential pleasure for your brighter children or for your friends/family.

Real Science That's Easy To Read

I was skeptical that I would enjoy this book, but it was recommended to me by a friend and I decided to give it a try. Needless to say, I'm glad I did.

The text is informal, but informative -- it feels like your rocket-scientist Uncle is explaining complex facts and ideas to you in layman's terms. I've always loved looking up at the night sky, but I've never really taken an interest in planetary science. This book went a long way in helping me understand just how complex and interesting the Solar System really is. While the book does cover the "50 most extreme places" in the Solar System, it's structured more like a collection of short 2-6 page essays covering specific topics than a 'Top 10' list.

All the sections are packed with interesting trivia [e.g. winds on Neptune can reach 1,000 miles per hour, Mercury has an average temperature of 336 degrees but has ice deposits, etc]. I think anyone age 10+ would find the book interesting, and the 10-and-under crowd will definitely enjoy the pictures. Some sections are more complex than others, so there's enough to keep both the highly-knowledgeable and casual reader entertained. All the sections of the book are self-contained, so you can read the book cover-to-cover or pick out an individual topic and spend 5-10 minutes reading only that section.

As other reviewers have noted, the images are absolutely terrific. The most interesting thing I discovered reading through this book is not how much we know about the Solar System, but how much we don't know about it. The book includes a glossary of terms in the back as well as a bibliography, if you're serious about learning some real planetary science. My only real criticism of the book is that I wish it were physically bigger, so they could have made the pictures larger. That being said, the book fits nicely on a coffee table and makes for fun conversation when someone reads a chapter like "Stinkiest Place -- The Rotten Egg of Io". If you're the kind of person who tends to look at the stars and wonder what's going on up there, this book is for you.

Fantastic Book

I have collected books like this since I was a kid wanting to be an astronaut. This is one of the best by far. It combines tons of great high def pictures, extreme information and a semi-Guinness-Book-of-World (Universe!) Records feel all in one book. This would be a great gift for almost anyone that is even slightly interested in the natural world, space exploration or atmospheric sciences. It might even spure somebody to pursue a career in this field. You can pick it up and put it down or stay up all night trying to figure out which place really is the most extreme. Fantastic Book!

Shil-Ponde toured the US in the early thirties, a tour to enlighten the West to the validity of Vedic Astrology. There are those that have tried to label him some kind of barker. However, I've been using his teachings since the middle '90s. Astrology has many quirks and validity problems. This book provide you with an alternate view of any problem one may encounter. I rank Shil-Ponde with Robert Hand, Reinhold Ebertin, PK Vasudev and MK Agarwal. Understand, I am not an astrologist. I consider myself more of a chronologist, one that correlate events to current heavenly configurations. My goal in life is to help the many and not the few that's doing just fine. This can only be accomplished with God's held through Astrology.

Formulaic, but Worthwhile

Men's ministry is all too often something of an afterthought for churches, usually taking the form of periodic breakfasts and fellowship outings that have anemic spiritual content and few long-term goals for growth. In Mobilizing Men, Steve Sonderman, builds a case for churches to intentionally pursue a model for discipling men based on relationships rather than activities, and people rather than programs.

Sonderman diagnoses the weak spiritual growth of most of today's Christian men as a symptom of aloneness. He says that churches too often leave men to grow on their own, and that leaves men stumbling through life with too little direction and protection, handicapping their ability to lead and undercutting their potential for ministry.

He urges pastors and churches to inculcate in their men a commitment to Christ that is developed and strengthened through prayer, through commitment to one another, and through fleshing out faith in ministry to others. He breaks down his plan through observations about the nature of the male psyche, and the unique needs of men for spiritual growth. Sonderman then launches into several "how-to" chapters (on discipleship, mobilization, leadership development, small groups, etc.) grounded in a faithful study of Scripture and his own experiences from years of ministering to men through the local church.

While books on specific areas of ministry are quite common, Sonderman's stands out not because it is innovative but because it is a refreshing recommitment to the tried and true building blocks of all effective discipleship: prayer, Scripture, fellowship, study, and outward ministry. Though somewhat formulaic in style, He offers a needed reminder that the work of the Church has always been accomplished by "apprenticeship" (that is, the careful discipleship of new believers that leads them into a deeper and more active faith) more than any other method. If the Church is to take back masculinity from the world and build the next generation of leaders, we would do well to follow his example and start discipling our men.

Good book

Over the past two decades reaching and keeping men in church has become increasingly difficult. I enjoyed Sonderman's book for several reasons. First if focuses on discipleship. It is not just about getting men into your church building the focus is all about discipling men which should be the end goal of all ministries in the church. I also enjoyed the book because it was an easy read. I read it on my Kindle and it took me around 4 or 5 hours of reading time. I tend to make lots of notes and highlights and I am a below average reader when it comes to speed. His writing style however is easy to follow and understand. The third reason I liked the book comes from his willingness to share solutions. Each chapter contains many different approaches or solutions to the problems discussed. He not only tells you what to do but also deals with how to do it. If you are trying to start, grow, or enhance your church's mens ministry or if you just want to read a book that is full of good advice and ideas I would recommend this one.

Discipleship is our calling

Being a disciple is not an option to those who claim to follow Christ. Unfortunately in today's culture being a 'Christian' really doesn't mean much as there is often little visible difference between those who profess to be a Christian and those who don't. This book challenges men to really think about what life's purpose is all about and what being a disciple is, and what it requires. Christ's call to follow Him should effect all areas of our life and determine how we live in the world around us. God's purposes become our purposes and others should see the Character of Christ in our day to day lives. This book encourages that and gives good direction in moving towards that in our lives. Christ gave his life for us in order that we can live free from the penalty of sin. The only thing we have to give Him back is our lives, lived for Him, showing His love for us to others. Many are lost and hurting and need this love in their lives. This book challenges our thinking to stir us towards living a life for Christ.

Frank H. Collins, PhD,�is Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame.� His research interests include genome level studies of arthropod vectors of human pathogens, the biology of malaria vectors with a focus on the development of molecular tools that will permit better resolution of questions about vector population ecology, ecological genetics, and the epidemiology of malaria transmission.

Dr. S. M. Niaz Arifin is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA. He received a Ph.D.�from the�University of Notre Dame,�an�M.S. from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a B.S. from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He has a decade of research and teaching experiences at multiple universities. He has been teaching courses including artificial intelligence and topics in parasitology and vector biology at the University of Notre Dame.�

Dr. Arifin's interdisciplinary research interests include agent-based modeling and simulation, bioinformatics, data warehouses, geographic information systems, and public health. His research has been published in the simulation, modeling, biology, and ecology literature. He authors over twenty journal articles, conference papers, books, textbooks and book chapters.
