Grizzly Bear shifter Jim Halcyon and his best friend wolf shifter Damon Black have a yearly tradition of gambling for Lady Luck, a copper coin they acquired when they were eighteen years old. This year the challenge is taking place on Friday in Las Vegas. Damon has won the bet the past three years. This time, Jim is determined not to let anything distract him from winning, especially women.
Black bear shifter Lillie Ruadh is on a quest to complete her bucket list before her life-changing move on Friday. Among the items is a stop and fling in Las Vegas. Having a few days to enjoy himself before Friday, Jim is more than happy to help Lillie out. However, there is more to Lady Luck then being a copper penny.
I really enjoyed Copper King. The story was endearing and entertaining throughout. The characters are likeable and fun. I enjoyed Jim’s and Damon’s friendship. Being different types of shifters is uncommon, making their relationship more special. Lillie being shy and mysterious brings an intrigue into the story.
The plot is engaging and carefully thought out. This made the book very hard to put down.
It has been a while since I read a book by Vivian Arend. It reminded me how much I enjoy her work and am glad that I read this book. Arend wrote a creative tale that I am sure will become a successful new series. I’m hoping we’ll hear Damon’s story soon.

Surprise

This Novella was previously published in the Alpa's After Dark anthology.
After his parents death Jim Halcyon gets by life on three things: woman, work, and more woman. With the amount of money he has he can do anything, have anything he wants. Except for Lady Luck. An ancient copper coin that he has to get his hands on. That quest takes him to Las Vegas.
While waiting for his chance to win this coin back he meets Lilly. A fellow bear shifter she seems out of sorts with the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. But Jim can't seem to stay away from her.
Lilly has her own plans. She's in Vegas to work on her bucket list. On top of that list is having a fling and Jim meets her requirements. With his help she starts marking things off.
What they don't know is there is more to each other than meets the eye.
I truly enjoyed the back and forth between Jim and Lilly. They seemed like they were perfect for each other almost from the start. The mystery of how and why Lilly was in Vegas made me laugh at the end. I haven't had a chance to read any other books by Vivian Arend but I'm definitely interested now.
Even though it was a novella I didn't feel shorted or that I needed more from the storyline. Truly an enjoyable read.

Average shifter read

Copper King is an enjoyable shifter novella about two bears, Jim and Lilly, and their sidekick wolf friend, Damon. The blurb pretty much tells the story. I'm not sure where this fits in with the series. if it's the first story I would have liked a lot more information about the world it's set in. It appears that shifters may be known about, if not, there's a lot of them.
There isn't much I have to say, it was a short, enjoyable read which doesn't add anything new to the shifter genre. I did think it was a nice touch that the author mentioned bears were basically loners and they're dying out because of that and the descriptions of Lilly's bear and how she just wants to sleep because it's hibernation time. Her bear is written as if it's a separate entity.
I would have liked more chemistry and heat between Jim and Lilly. I just wasn't feeling by the end that Lilly would make the decision she did at the end based on her time to date with Jim (though she was hardly enthusiastic about the turn her life was supposed to take).
