I am teaching a course on Animal/Human relationships in visual media and this book is wonderful--I will use it as a text next time around. It is one of only a few books that directly address animals in visual media--all kinds--which is wonderful as a matter of educating on the topic. It is also fresh and informative---critical examination.

This is a very complex, indepth, informative book on molecular and genetic evolution. Explainations of genetic drift, mutation rates, times to fixation, patterns in evolutionary changes. Lots of statistical information on how allele frequencies change. Written for a knowledgable audiance with a good understanding of evolution and genetics. Gives informative understanding of trends in evolution beyond natural selection. Supports neutral theory of evolution quite strongly.

An excellent introduction or review of molecular evolutionary principles.

I have been using this book as a study guide for my qualifying examinations in evolutionary biology & genetics. It is concise and well-illustrated. The citations to original papers are exceptional. The authors do an amazing job of making difficult material seem simple. I'm now considering using this book as the basis for a lecture course. Maybe for those who enjoy crunching equations for hours this is not the best text, but for everyone else who wants practical knowledge that is readily applicable to phylogenetic and bioinformatic research in the field of molecular evolution--I have seen no better text.

Containing some obvious errors

The book contains some obvious errors. For example, when describing dynamic programming, the recursive formula is wrong. Another example is on P.162, where it is said that the KA/KS ratio exceeds 100 for conservative genes.

In general, the book briefly touches on a lot of topics. While the book is meant to serve an introductory purpose, some details necessary for understanding the concepts are missing.

Chicks Ahoy! (2010) is a Fantasy omnibus from the Chicks in Chainmail series, containing the first three volumes: Chicks in Chainmail, Did You Say Chicks?!, and Chicks 'N Chained Males. singular skewering satires

This omnibus collection contains the frisky frolicking first three Chicks Amazonian anthology adventures. With a parry, lunge and tongue in cheek (that is the female warrior not turning the other cheek like in "The Old Grind" (Laura Frankos) but in the other's cheek. Heroines are not afraid to fight in the MUD as George Alec Effinger affirms.

Chicks in Chainmail. These are the original twenty tales. Elizabeth Moon (she also contributes shorts to the other two collections) sets the tone with "And Ladies of the Club" as the king plans to tax bras while Janni Lee Simner answers with "Bra Melting". Holly Lisle's "Armor-Ella" stars six foot El and not so Prince Charming. Finally there is super mom at "Career Day" by Margaret Ball and a female guard protecting a brothel in "The Guardswoman" by Lawrence Watt-Evans (he also contributes short stories to the other two collections).

Did you say chicks?! The second Chicks warrior anthology contains nineteen entries including a Starhawk tale by Barbara Hambly. Harry Turtledove's contribution shows the importance of gender teamwork and a "valiant vanquished" in "The Attack of the Avenging Virgins" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough (she also contributes a short story in the first book) as women (virgins and veterans) kick all types of butt.

Chicks 'n chained Males. These sixteen contributions star women in shining armor (often less attire) who come to the aid of lads in distress. Susan Casper's "Why Do You Think They call It Middle Earth" stars a fighting female taking on dragons and other ilk to save hapless men as does "Leg Irons, The Bitch and the Wardrobe" by Ms. Frankos.

Readers of both genders will appreciate this compilation, but I suggest reading the Chicks Ahoy saga over several months as the theme is singular skewering satires summed up by "A Bitch in Time" (Doranna Durgin).

A fun read

If you like tongue in cheek humor you will love this book. It contains the first three collections of short stories in the Chicks in Chain Mail series edited by Esther Freisner. The king levies a tax on female warriors bronze Bras. Hillary Clinton wakes up in Valhalla, Bandits choose the worst time possible to raid a village full of women after their men leave. If you don't like liquid spewing from your nose or choking on a drink, then use caution while reading this book.

Paul Stollard is an architect and chartered fire engineer who has worked in this field for over 30 years. He is a former Director of Abrahams Stollard Ltd, and has been Chief Executive of the Scottish Building Standards Agency and Regional Director for Scotland and Northern England with the Health and Safety Executive. He received the ‘Peter Stone Award’, the highest individual award given annually by the Association of Building Engineers for his work on fire engineering and building standards.

Dolman's thoughts in Astropolitik should be essential reading for anyone interested in space power and its relationship to the security of freedom, democracy and the United States in the 21st century. This book will definitely be required reading for military space leaders in the future, and should be read by every space leader or enthusaist today be they from the military, civil, or commercial sectors. Realist politics and unilateral action may be disheartening to some, and many may be opposed to Dolman's 'advice' at the end, but the logic and arguments he presents are sound and must be addressed by any potential opposition.
In all, Astropolitik will become a classic of space power theory.

The geopolitics of space will be a more timely topic in the years ahead with so many spacefaring nations seeding fleets to 'the Moon, Mars, and Beyond.' The serious treatment of geopolitics of space is of growing importance. The space regimes fashioned by diplomats of the past must evolve in the years ahead to foster commercial activity and private property ownership. Astropolitics is abound as most recently evidenced by the reaction to President George W. Bush and his space policy internationally. This is masterfully accomplished in this book, which, while been accessible and democratic in its style, is highly informed and thought-provoking.
With the traditional struggles over terrestrial supremacy being far from over, the arena of space offers a new field for the realization of the power strategies of the contemporary "Great Powers". Exciting and Touching Story of a Walk

I really feel as though I took this journey with Peter Jenkins. He is a hiker who can make you feel as though you're on the trail with him. I fell in love with him and I fell in love with his dog, Cooper. I came to realize why dogs have been referred to as man's best friends. I'd thought from the title that Jenkins would be walking the entire time, not realizing that he would need to stop and work in order to continue to survive. On the whole, Jenkins was treated well. Ask yourself if you ever imagined that a white man in the seventies could move into a black neighborhood, live with a black family, and go to church with them every Sunday and become like one of the family? Or could you imagine a mountain man who raises all his own food, a virtual hermit, welcoming Jenkins into his home and treating him like a son? Still, there are some scary experiences on the road--some close calls--ones that will make your heart pound a little faster.

Jenkins enjoys neighborly love in this book and by the end falls in love two more times (I won't spoil the story by providing details). Let me just say that I feel this book has it all--a little of every type of connection a healthy man or woman needs for the good life. Dog lovers and even those who have never felt a deep connection with animals of any sort (the exception for me would be my brother's dog in recent years) will feel an emotional investment in this story of a man and his beloved dog and the many wonderful, amazing, and occasionally scary people they meet.

Let me tell you about this book. I got it solely because of the title (and the dog). I have had my own little rescue for about a year now, and this book pulled at my heart strings. I needed something to refuel my wanderlust and this was just the thing. It inspired me to move across country, focus on myself, and begin my own journey (with my pup). I laughed audibly at this book, cried, and have already reread it. I sent my father a copy to read as well. I can't stress how incredible this book is.

It was okay

I kept hearing about how you just had to read this book so I finally did. I enjoyed it okay. I got a little tired of his highly dramatic writing. Some incidences just didn't ring true for me--seemed like fiction. I don't think it is a hiking must read as a lot of people claim. I will probably read some of his other books since they are pretty inexpensive.

This took place in the 70's. I did like that his goal was to learn more about the U.S. and he hiked with an open mind and was very pleasantly surprised. He decided that this country is a good place with good people. I do think a lot of people who hate this country now days should do the same sort of hiking. I think they would find out it is still a good country with good people.

THE FIRST AUTHOR WHO DARED TO READ DELEUZE AS A PHILOSOPHER WHO WAS REALLY INSPIRED BY MATHEMATICS

I think Simon Duffy is doing a beautiful work in his interpretations of Deleuze. He was, as far as I know, the first one to read Deleuze using mathematics and philosophy integrated in his approach. Something that we really need, because Deleuze liked very much the calculus. Many of his books have the dy/dx formula, which is a fine approach to the post-kantian Salomon Maimon inspiration, a philosopher that Kant himself declared that had a good interpretation of his work. This shows the creativity and the seriousness of Deleuze's work.
From the book about Nietzsche to the one about Leibniz, Deleuze dealt with the post-kantian and pre-kantian mathematic interpretations of his work, and that was a serious effort. Of course only a few people can follow him in this approach, and Simon Duffy is the first to take the task seriously. I hope he keeps working on these topics and, maybe, write a more introductory book to the ones that want to study this, but don't know where to start. Deleuze favored the historical approach to the calculus, as you can read in Difference and Repetition, and maybe Simon Duffy could amplify that passage to a whole book. I think Deleuze's heritage deserves a work like this. If not by Simon, then by someone who wants to investigate this fascinating side of Deleuze's work.
I'm not in the position of trying this, but I understand perfectly that from (Spinoza and) Leibniz to Salomon Maimon, the calculos was very important in Deleuze's philosophy, and this is truly beautiful. And I'm not mentioning some other aspects of the math approach, because I think this is the most important.

A difficult book to read but one which shows Duffy's facility with Deleuze and Deleuze's command of the history of calculus. This book makes one very suspicious of claims made by Sokal et al about Deleuze, that is, it seems that they did not read DIfference and Repetition before attacking Deleuze.

Bravo, Duffy! This is a hard read but worth it. I am still slogging through it, confused at times but happy overall.

Speaking only of my wishes like the first commentator

Speaking only of my wishes like the first commentator: the polemic seems to be very productive for the author but maybe less so for the general reader unless it is opened into broader discussions of Deleuzian themes beyond his mathematics. For example, I'm totally taken by Duffy's emphasis on the (folding?) function of "a point" versus the approximation operation it can generate by derivatives. This can provide the most valuable insight for my understanding of the Fold, which leaves me craving for more.
