Jean Plaidy, one of the preeminent authors of historical fiction for most of the twentieth century, is the pen name of the prolific English author Eleanor Hibbert, also know as Victoria Holt. Jean Plaidy's novels had sold more than 14 million copies worldwide by the time of her death in 1993.

should be epitaph for 2 women and 1" just desserts"

This had to be the saddest so far of the Plantagenet Saga - even all the earlier story were sad nothing is as sad as Joan of Arc and Katharine of Valois. I did not know that the English was responsible for the death of Joan of Arc. She was surely a remarkable young woman and very important to the French people trying to win the war. Her life and death galvanized the French people. They couldn't lose after her saintly death. Shame on the English!

The second woman was Katharine of Valois who was the widow of Henry the 5th. When Henry died his son Henry (VI) was only nine months old. Katharine was happy being able to take care of the baby King but of course one day as it is with all boy Kings they must go and be trained by men. It made Katharine sad but she had a good friend, the Squire Owen Tudor, who helped her get through it. Of course they fall deeply in love and get secretly married. They are left alone happy for a long time, long enough for them to have 4 children. When it was found out that Owen and Katharine were married, Owen was arrested and the children were taken away and Katharine was sent to a convent, supposedly for her health. She is so broken hearted that she eventually dies the same day that Owen breaks out of prison to come and get her.

I cried for both women, it was so tragic.

Now, the just desserts. The third woman was Eleanor of Gloucester who was married to Henry VI's uncle. He was second to the throne should Henry die without a heir. Eleanor was doing everything in her power to make sure that that was going to happen even going so far as seeking help from a witch and soothsayers. The witch and soothsayers eventually are arrested and the authorities find evidence that someone had hired them to help get rid of the King. It finally comes out that it is Eleanor of Gloucester - thus begins her downfall. All the accompliances are sentenced to death but because Eleanor is "royalty" she is sent away to a castle imprisoned for the rest of her life. Terrible for her because she lived for the intrigue and the Court. Hence, just desserts.

This book was great, it can stand by itself but is better understood as part of the series.

Three women...ambitious, virtous and serene.

Jean Plaidy never disappoints when she weaves her magic into the stories of long ago. Epitaph For Three Women is another of her fine works of art.

Katherine of Valois, married to Henry V, is a new widow with a the young Henry VI to bring to the throne. While she lives contented she soon finds love with a Welsh squire by the name of Owen Tudor. She and Owen have such a pure love and they wed in secret, just before a law passes stating that no woman of nobility can marry below her rank. And Katherine is with child. Her dreams of happiness have finally come true, until her secret is finally out...

Joan of Arc...Wow! What a human being! She had such devotion to God that He gives her a task: to save France from the English. And Joan (or Jeanette in her native French) does so with great strife and struggle. She was visited by St. Catherine, St. Margaret and the Archangel Michael who gave her strength in her times of utter despair. And even when the French King turned his back on her (after she led the French army in a battle to have him crowned in Rheims) she was still devoted to him in every way. She was soon captured by the English and burned at the stake as a witch. But they clearly burned a saint. All this before she even reached 20!

Eleanor of Gloucester was just a peasant girl who had high ambitions. The Duke of Gloucester fell under her 'love spell.' Eleanor was a great believer in witchcraft and with the help of a certain 'witch' she was soon married to the most powerful man in England, aside from the King. Unfortunately, her ambitions would in the end bring on her demise as well as others around her. She never would bear the child she so longed for and her hopes of doing away with the young King would amount to nothing.

Epitaph For Three Women is an exceptional piece of work. Jean Plaidy was a master at bringing the early 15th century to life and once again, I was swept away!

About the Author

Epictetus (circa 55-135 ce) taught in Rome until the year 94 ce, when Emperor Domitian banished philosophers from the city. In exile, he established a school of philosophy where his distinguished students included Marcus Aurelius, author of Meditations. Some 1,863 years after Epictetus's death, Tom Wolfe revived his philosophy in the bestselling novel A Man in Full.

So Much Wisdom

The remarkable thing about this book is it contains so much wisdom in so few words. It truly lives up to its title - A Manual For Living.

If there is any fault to be found with the book it would be in its brevity. I have read many books that say less in four times the number of words.

It is really amazing that so many of the truths of living a purposeful life filled with happiness have been around for so long. We struggle with day to day problems because we fail to seek the answers contained in this book.

It is also amazing that most of todays graduates of institutions of higher learning do not possess the wisdom that Epictetus did. We seem to have become a nation concentrating on acquiring knowledge without learning how to apply that knowledge. Epictetus shows us the way to achieve our purpose in life. To achieve freedom, which he says is the ultimate way to live.

Some of the better lessons are:

You become what you give your attention to.

Think things through and fully commit!

A half-hearted spirit has no power. Tentative efforts lead to tentative outcomes.

Wise people on the other hand realise that we are the source of everything good or bad.

It you want all the wisdom without an excessive amount of reading, this book is for you. It is short enough you can read it weekly and let the concepts sink into your subconscious mind where they can lead you to the life you were designed to live.

In with a bang, out with a whimper

Cthulhu Tales Omnibus collects several of the first issues of Cthulhu Tales into one big volume (I think the other Cthulhu Tales non-omnibus volumes only have 2 or 3 issues).

The three stars is for the art and creativity. It's a lot of fun to experience Cthulhu in a variety of different settings, from the ultra serious to tongue in cheek, like an elementary school rendition of the King in Yellow.

What kills me, however, is that without fail, every single one of these stories begins with a bang, and trickles off with a whimper. Literally, every single story sets up this great premise, and then fizzles out into a non-ending. OK, sure, LOTS of Lovecraft end with a character simply going mad, but most of the time, it's a final revelation that sends the narrator over the edge. Here, it's like the author was writing the story, realized he only had one page left, and then simply ended it with a two or three panel quick fix. It really sucks, because ANY attempt to come up with a proper ending would be extremely welcome - there are a few that come close, but barely.

Anyway, I'm not one of these purists complaining about a lack of Lovecraft style - I love delving into all worlds Cthulhu, humorous or morose. BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to write future stories with actual endings!!!

War Is Chaos

It provides a decent overview of the lengthy war, including the jostling and betrayals by the Nationalists and Communists, who were fighting each other as well as the Japanese. He relied too much on "official" accounts (which are often suspect) and did no analysis, but still manages to give a feeling for the scope of the battles, some of the tragedy on the Chinese side, and the utter futility of the Japanese efforts, doomed from the start. The maps could be improved, but then I'm a map freak ;-)

Wilson's Attempt at a Comprehensive History

The long conflict between China and Japan is a very difficult subject for any history writer, so Dick Wilson deserves credit for at least giving it a try. I had a basic understanding of the war from 1937-1945, but there was much I did not know. "Tigers" does fill in some gaps, but I was still left wanting in the end. The impression I got on reading the book was that it is not comprehensive enough to encompass a conflict comparable in scale to the enormous confrontation between the USSR and Germany from 1941-1945. Nevertheless the book does provide information about the major battles during this period, and gives some flavor of the points of view of Chiang-Kai-Shek and the Kuomintang (KMT) and Mao and the Communist Chinese Party (CCP).

In Wilson's defense, some of the difficulties in writing a comprehensive history of the Sino-Japanese War must be pointed out. There are multiple sides from which any writer would have to gain source material in order to create a truly objective history: The People's Republic of China (PRC, the Mainland), the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan), Japan, the United States, Britain, the USSR, and Germany. The real problem with source material from the first three nations present the biggest obstacles. The PRC, ROC, and Japan all have axes to grind and points of view that conflict with the others. The KMT retreated to Taiwan in 1949 after their defeat by Mao and the Communists in the aftermath of the civil war that followed Japan's surrender to the Allies in 1945. Even though the PRC has become more open since Wilson wrote "Tigers" in the 1980s, it is still controlled by the Communists, who fought an ongoing war with the KMT both before and at the same time as the conflict with Japan. It is still a repressive dictatorship and any source material obtained from the PRC must be used with that in mind. On the other hand, Taiwan has mostly been run by KMT exiles since 1949, and information gained from them must also be taken with a grain of salt. Japan has been criticized in recent years for minimizing or omitting altogether the atrocities they committed during the war. The bottom line is that Wilson did not have a full slate to work with. Any new effort at creating a narrative of this long and complex conflict would have to balance the many nations, parties, and interests involved.

The rise of the PRC as a major world power in the last few decades makes such a history essential in understanding how China, Taiwan, and Japan fit into the world order as we see it today. What is needed from the Western point of view is someone with a similar approach to David Glantz, who has made the WWII Russo-German conflict his specialty. Glantz had the good fortune of beginning his series of books soon after the fall of the USSR, which resulted in an opening up of former Soviet archives. Glantz's books have gone far to provide new insights into what happened in that war, such as "Zhukov's Greatest Defeat," his detailed tome on Operation Mars, a major defeat of Soviet forces in 1942 unknown to the West until the book was published in 2005. Any attempt at a comprehensive history of the Sino-Japanese War will require years of research, a great deal of patience, and some real diplomatic skills. Perhaps the best approach would be to follow the model Rick Atkinson used in his "Liberation Trilogy," dividing it up into three volumes. This would enable the writer to include a detailed examination of the Japanese takeover of Manchuria in 1931, which some consider the real beginning of the Sino-Japanese conflict.

The ONLY military history of the 1937-45 War

Students of Sino-Japanese History will know that very few military histories of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-45 were ever written in English. This largely reflects the lack of interest in the West about this important theater of WW2 - which is usually passed over, with Western focus directed exclusively to Europe and the US war in the Pacific. This is a shame and a tragedy for the Sino-Japanese War was vast in scale - in terms of land areas, numbers of combatants, the numbers of civilians affected and the spill-over effects it had on other theaters of WW2. The Holocaust of European Jews is well-known, but how many in the West know about the Rape of Nanjing ? How many in the West understood the significance of China's contribution to victory in Asia ? How many in the West can say how far westward Japan's ambitions would have led if not checked in China ? Obviously, the West has much to learn about this colorful chapter in history. And Dick Wilson's book is THE place to look.
Students of Sino-Japanese history will also know Dick Wilson's book well. In 3 continents and over 10 countries, countless students, historians, doctors, scientists and casual readers I have spoken to seem to know this book well ... over 20 years after it was first published !! That's basically because Dick Wilson's book is still the ONLY popular military history of the war ever written in English. Oh sure, there are countless military histories in Chinese popular press (not Japanese because Japan officially has a 'different' view of history) and many academic texts exploring this war in English. But the latter are so scholarly and academic that they are beyond the attention span of the average reader. Dick Wilson's book is one you can pick up at anytime and have a good, satisfying read. The narrative is exciting, action-packed, full of amusing anecdotes and interesting events and yet sober and sympathetic in the right places. The author brings the charisma and quirks of the main characters in the war to vivid life. The brilliance, follies, and unique savagery of this ferociously fought war are presented with almost CNN-realism. Dick Wilson uses 1st hand witness accounts of the events of the war to captivating effect. It's as good to read as a good novel - yet you are assured through every page that the facts have been authoritatively researched. So much so that many students will find details and insights to the charcters that they probably never knew before. What a brilliant way to study this fascinating, epic war !
I first read this book in high school. It has remained on my list of 'desert island books' ever since. I was disappointed it has never been reprinted, or had a second edition. I was disappointed no other similar books have ever been written in English. In the end, I couldn't resist and book a used copy of this book. I arrived in 'well read' condition - I can understand why.

If you're struggling in your class buy this book

This book helped my pass an Ada class in school. It is just much more readable that my class text and examples ( not that there are many ) that you can find online. My college has a well known expert on Ada teaching there and his helped me more than his class - not that he isn't great but we all have different learning styles.

Clear, Complete, And Surprisingly Fun To Read

I bought the first edition of Rendezvous With Ada many years ago, and with it as my only guide was able to learn this fairly complex language within a few weeks. The flow of the text is excellent, moving from simple to more challenging topics at a good pace. Even better, every aspect of the language, down to the most minute detail, is not only explained, but is demonstrated in one of the many example code segments that lace the book. As an added bonus, the example code is often as humorous as it is lucid. Together with the general enthusiasm conveyed by the prose, the examples not only made learning Ada easier, but genuinely fun. In the second edition of the book Naiditch has included coverage of the newer Ada95 version of the language, not merely by adding a few paragraphs at the end of each chapter, but by a thorough rewriting of the entire book - a rewriting that considerably expanded the book's content, but in no way lost the delightful enthusiasm of the first edition. I've read several other Ada texts since; although all have their merits, none come close to matching this one.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the first book in the series. What I didn't enjoy though was the numberous errors that should have been caught by proofreaders. Still it was a good read and I plan on reading the third book.
