Palmer, a broadcaster, orchestral arranger and music writer who has published books on a number of modern composers, discusses the life and works of 11 of the great creators of film scores from 1930 to 1950: Max Steiner, Erich Korngold, Alfred Newman, Franz Waxman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Roy Webb, Miklos Rozsa, Bernard Herrman, Alex North, Elmer Bernstein and Leonard Rosenman. He shows how, after the advent of talking movies in 1929, these men developed a new type of music that enhanced the images on the screen and intensified dramatic effect. Writing in language understandable to the lay reader yet sophisticated enough to hold the interest of the professional musician, he re-creates the powerful spells that many of the famous scenes in movies from Hollywood's Golden Age exerted on audiences and shows how mood was achieved by the brilliant interweaving of music and drama. An interesting look into the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Although, not a definite work about the great film music composers of the Golden Age (those are few and far between anyway) this one does have it's charms, particularly when the author is writing about one of his favorite artists. But the obvious disdain Palmer seems to have for Max Steiner, or that the great Victor Young is barely mentioned, prevents this book from being as useful as it could have been. Still, if you simply love the movies of the 30's and 40's then you will likely enjoy this. The point of view of the author is closely tied with how the music works in the picture, and the films that are usually mentioned as examples are those that many if not most film buffs will have seen.

Good book that's concise. Plan on retyping the included code examples

Like the other reviewers indicated, the book is concise and to the point with good examples. I have pretty good t-sql skills, but couldn't quite get some of the Oracle pl/sql differences, which this book filled in very well. However, the code examples provided have to be clipped from the kindle book which introduces problems running the code in TOAD. Also, there's a limit on the # of times you can copy the book. I'll probably spend as much time removing the invalid characters or retyping the examples as I did reading the book.

To start off, I've been writing pl/sql for over 10 yrs. Soon many books are filled with fluff and takes a lot of weeding thru to get to the details. This book cuts straight to the chaise and gives u what u need. no BS. Highly recommended this book for beginners or even folks that need a bit of brushing up on the details.

Superficial

The description of the book has more meat than the book itself. This disappointing book is a 15 short chapter breeze through a multitude of subjects, and does not linger long on any single subject. There are some nice diagrams and ten thousand foot views crammed into 374 total pages (the page count vs. chapter count alone should indicate how superficial this book is). An example is the 21 pages devoted to weighty subjects encompassing project management tasks, configuration management, verification and validation, quality assurance, decisions and risks. Any one of the topics would have merited at least 20 page in a serious book on systems engineering. Useful to sales and marketing types who are selling systems engineering services, and executive management who might like a quick overview of systems engineering. This book is useless for technical professionals.

This is where to start

I am often asked which book on systems engineering I should start with. This is it. The one quality of the book above all is readability. Even though there are books about the more advanced aspects of systems engineering, this is the one that will give you a fairly comprehensive overview. Even though most books do not explain what the holistic approach is, this one does a pretty good job for a book at this level. The one shortcoming that the reader might encounter is that even though the title uses the word complexity, the book does not attempt to define complexity, not even in the glossary. More advanced books use phrases like "non-linear interactions among components". The simple premise of this book is that if you have a system with a lot of parts that may interact in an unpredictable way, you can deal with that situation by having a good set of requirements and managing them well. This is a good start but it is not the whole story on complexity. Nevertheless, this is a good place to start before you go on to the more advanced books.

Moana Sticker Fun and Activity Book for Moana fans

This book is a great book to keep the elementary school aged (maybe grades 1-4?) kids busy. My daughter immediately went for the 50-sticker section and integrated the stickers into the scenes as she read the exciting story. The majority of the coloring section has detailed drawings that you may want to use colored pencils, but there are a few larger character pages that you could use crayons.

Make sure to note that the orange circle on the book cover alerts you that you have a free digital storybook to download. It is the Step into Reading Level 3 "Moana Quest for the Heart", a book we have the hard copy of and enjoy. It's a great book for Grades 1-2.

A great many of the possibilities are rather repetitive

Perhaps the author is British, or knows of some people who have weird jobs, but I didn't even recognize some of the occupations used in this book. A great many of the possibilities are rather repetitive, at least in that there must be dozens of ways to strangle somebody, or tools with which to stab the victim. Most of the lists at the end of the book appear to be the same options the author used in order to come up with the 500 murder scenes. As there are usually more than 300 numbered options for each list from which the prompts are taken, I'm sure there are many more than 500 possibilities. It's just that I got supremely BORED in trying to read through them. The author might try couching the phrases in simpler words? Or perhaps figuring out a system where list A leads to list B, which leads to list C, etc., instead of displaying them without rhyme or reason?

This was one of the most fun and interactive stories I have read. All of the ideas listed in the book were unique and could be a great basis for your next novel. I especially enjoyed the generator at the back of the book where you could pick random numbers and come up with all the information you would need to write your next bestseller. I have used books like this one several times, and I love it. The story that I was able to write was amazing, I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of this book. Say goodbye to writers block!

I guess I've never felt so bereft of ideas that I had to turn to a scene generator like this. Perhaps if I was really desperate

A little disappointing. The scenarios presented felt dated as though they came from an earlier text. I guess I've never felt so bereft of ideas that I had to turn to a scene generator like this. Perhaps if I was really desperate I might be able to make something of this.
