I could see Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

This isn't the type of book that I usually read- but I found it immensely interesting. It deals with night fighters throughout history, from the Moshuk Nanren (China), to the Hashishins (Islam), and Ulfhedrin (Norse.) There is a fair amount of philosophical and spiritual information included with the nuts and bolts of how to move unseen and neutralize defenses- and opponents.

I suppose that this book feeds my dark side, but it provides the kind of information that outsiders and underdogs (i.e. freedom fighters) need to strike back. Indeed, the Ninja (Shinobi) struck back at the injustices of the Samuri and their lords. The Ninja were considered to be descended from Tengu- half man/ half crow demons. They were said to be forest magicians with supernatural powers.

I could imagine Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

A good reference for this topic....

This is the first book I've read by this author but not the first book of this kind I've read. I found Knights of Darkness to be quite engaging. The historical aspects of the book are quite good without being annoying. The author provides a healthy dose of history without making it a history book. Likewise, he provides a great deal of practical (or should I say "tactical"?) information which I found to be useful to someone in those kinds of endeavors. Along with this information, he also gives historical proof of it's effectiveness.
I was especially impressed by the section on developing your senses, as this is not the first time I've read this type of information. Several other books I've read mention the necessity, and advantage, of developing your senses. I am personally taking this to heart. After all, having better developed senses should benefit in all areas of life.
Mention has been made of the simplicity of this book. In defense of the author, the majority of people write on a third-grade level and read on a level not much higher. In an effort to reach the majority of readers, an author shouldn't write on a level challenging to college students. "Write simple, write for the masses."
I was also impressed with the author's inclusion of criminal organizations. Many authors would find including criminals as a "good example" to be distasteful. However, criminal organizations often use methods to achieve their goals which are wholly applicable to the topic of the book. As the author states, "If a tactic, technique, or training method works, use it, no matter what its origins. In other words, whatever gets you through the night."
In conclusion, I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. I would recommend it to anyone seeking information in this field.

Antonia Rubino is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia. Aside from the brief and gratuitous introduction by John Updike, there is no text. No discussion of design aesthetics or historical influences is included. Had they been larger or chosen to illustrate some thesis, the images might have justified a catalog of covers. As it is, one wonders for whom the book was intended.

Lovely book -- endlessly enjoyable

The book is a feast! The main frustration is that it stops in 1989. There are twelve cover images on each page; each cover image is about 2-1/2" x 3-1/4". To really enjoy the covers, I think you need a magnifying glass, which is not a nuisance. I am reminded of using an old, hand-held stereopticon viewer and changing slides. I almost wish the artist info for the covers had been printed in a separate booklet to be kept in a pocket inside the back cover. Instead, the info is in a right-justified, wrap-around format on the page that introduces each year, so you need to flip from the covers to the list and find or keep your place in the list as you browse through the covers -- which can be distracting and does add wear and tear to the book. The Index of artists is a great asset.

Did Fletcher make errors in judgment, as some of his critics have claimed, or was he primarily a victim of internal politics within the military? This volume helps clarify the issue. The biography chronicles Fletcher's life as a loyal career naval officer, starting with his childhood as scion of a locally prominent family in Marshalltown, Iowa, and including his attendance at the U.S. Naval Academy, where Nimitz, Spruance, and Halsey were among his classmates; his exemplary service at Vera Cruz and in World War I; and his assignments in Asia and in Washington, D.C., throughout the 1920s and 1930s, which allowed him to see firsthand the rise of Japan that brought the nation into World War II. The author also offers insights into the wartime U.S.-Russia Lend-Lease program in which Fletcher played unheralded butimportant roles as diplomat and supervisor. The author, Stephen Regan, has done an excellent job of summing the book. Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher is a an integral figure in the Pacific War, WW II and has received much harsh criticism, relegating him to the category of mediocrity at best. Other authors have not investigated the facts as has Mr. Regan. In my opinion, This book is essential to those studying the naval war with Japan. The book explains much beyond just the admiral's personal situation, too, including naval politics of the day, an essential element of the picture.

A Swift and Wholly Entertaining Read.

I was shocked by how funny this story actually was. I was expecting some crazy erotica and there were some crazy erotica scenes but this story was such a teardown of celebrity culture. I can see this as an awesome video series with these acted out in real life. I've read all of Anastasia Angelique's stories and this one was the most graphic and it was very over the top and hilarious. It was a little more than I'd like to pay for a short story but worth every penny many times over.
