Review

"… very well constructed and extremely useful within its stated scope. The completeness of the treatment of topics, combined with the MATLAB examples of individual functions, is impressive. Examples are explained in great detail, with the command-line code presented, and explained, piece by piece. A student, or anyone else needing to develop image processing functions, will find this book very functional and valuable, both as a textbook and a self-contained reference."
―Computing in Science & Engineering, July/August 2015

"The book is practical and accessible and has limited formalism. I do not know of any other books with this approach for medical image processing."
―Professor Amir A. Amini, University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA

"… a very useful book in an area that needs ongoing information transfer."
―Professor Robert L. Galloway, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA

"I mention the book every time I meet someone who asks what the best way is to get into this field."
―Professor Leo Joskowicz, Head of Computer-Assisted Surgery and Medical Image Processing Laboratory, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel

"The strengths of the book are undulated ― it is an exceptionally useful, practical, and approachable tool for teaching medical image computing to undergraduate students."
―Professor Gabor Fichtinger, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Praise for the First Edition:
"The topics covered are clearly explained, including explanations of the mathematical operations that are required, therefore making it an ideal text for anyone who is new to medical image processing. … an interesting and helpful introduction to medical image processing. … This text is likely to be of interest to students starting work in medical image processing and would be a useful library text for hospital departments offering training in medical imaging."
―Sarah Cade, Scope, December 2011

"The book … achieves its purpose very well. … The CD adds substantial value to the text and serves as an excellent guide to practice the information covered in the text. … Several books on image processing have been published recently, and this book takes a backseat to none of them. … Students who take a course where this book is used as the course text will be fortunate indeed."
―William Hendee, Medical Physics, Vol. 37, December 2010

"… an outstanding work that will be of interest to virtually all biomedical engineers. The text is easy to follow, supposing only that the reader has a modest knowledge of linear algebra, basic engineering principles, and computer programming. I was impressed by the content as well as by the amount of information that is packed on each page. In each well-organized chapter, important concepts and definitions are described concisely and well. Relevant medical images used for processing complement many of the concepts discussed. Where important, the mathematical formulation is provided. The text and images refer to several MATLAB-based programming examples that are provided at the end of each chapter. These are useful to apply the concepts to actual medical image processing. The book can be used in part as an excellent reference work for biomedical engineers, scientists, and clinicians. This is a well-written, coherent, and comprehensive work covering the major topics in the field, suitable as a standalone text … . The book is enjoyable to read, and students and professionals will not be bored when doing so. Engineers and scientists will find useful coverage of the field, and students will find the entire volume to be filled with important information."
―Edward J. Ciaccio, Columbia University, New York, USA, BioMedical Engineering OnLine, 2011

"I have found this book very useful … . It is comprehensive and well written."
―Professor Terry Peters, Robarts Research Institute, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada

"This is a lucid, well-written, and hands-on textbook that explains in simple terms and with examples the basic issues of medical image processing. It contains many examples and useful programs."
―Professor Leo Joskowicz, Head of Computer-Assisted Surgery and Medical Image Processing Laboratory, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel

"The plethora of examples in each chapter … allows the reader to apply the theory and visually assess the outcomes. This book is a perfect blend of theory and practice. I highly recommend it."
―Dr. Pascal Fallavollita, Technical University of Munich, Germany

"… significant and timely. It provides a cogent, not overly simplified, not excessively mathematical treatise of basic principles that the student, trainee, young scientist, and junior practitioner can readily grasp and apply. … will help facilitate the ongoing, almost magical evolution of modem medical imaging … they who read this book will be able to make 'a truly useful picture'."
―From the Foreword by Richard A. Robb, Ph.D, Mayo Medical School, Rochester, Minnesota, USA

Really helpful for detoxing
By Lauren Wardell
I debated whether or not to purchase this book after reading a review on here saying that it was very basic knowledge on detoxing. I'm by no means a detox expert, but I do consider myself someone that is decently educated on the topic. Because of that review, I kinda debated downloading it for awhile and read a few other books..but was intuitively pulled back to it. I'm so glad I was! This is a very comprehensive guide to a lot of the essential oils, supplements, etc...infused with spiritual concepts and prayers that were REALLY helpful. I think this handbook would be very useful for the average person who hasn't extensively studied detoxing. I don't think it was written for someone who's already naturopath practitioner or anything..you probably won't find any new information that you don't already know. But...I am a spiritual weight loss coach and found tons of helpful information in here. If you're looking for a guidebook to take you through detoxing with a spiritual approach...this is a great place to start :)

"SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE, AND SAFE METHODS FOR IMPROVING YOUR WELL-BEING!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
This inspiring book is informative, concise, and educational. The authors deliver information on the physical, emotional, and spiritual detox methods, through a step-by-step program. They define the true meaning of the word 'detox' as they highlight this process of removing unhealthy substances, and energies from your life.

Healing methods are introduced that are simple, and safe. The reader is guided on a healing journey, by letting go of anything that no longer serves you. The end results are rewards, and happiness. In addition, the authors discuss how to stay happy, and secure, through the ability to also help others. There is information on what to expect from a detox, letting go of unhealthy lifestyle habits, the life force of food, and more. There is also material on A Naturopathic Perspective; Diet & Lifestyle; How Often We Should detox; Healing Methods; Addiction; and The Purpose Of Healing crystals.

The importance of Mother Nature, Outdoors, and Sunlight is discussed. Information is presented on the Red Flag alert when digestion is in trouble, Food Allergies, The Importance of Water, and the disadvantages of Fluoride. The benefits of Filtered water is also discussed, and the advantages of Herbal Medicine.Other factors are also presented, to help aid in the release of toxins.I learned a great deal about the healing properties of essential Oils, Detoxing your kitchen, Safe and Unsafe Cookware, and nontoxic Kitchen Cleaners. The healing properties of Garlic is also discussed, the benefits of Lemon juice, Superfood Powders, and Green Smoothies. A 7 day Detox Plan is included, along with findings on essential Fatty Acids, Brown Rice, and more. Important information is also included on the disadvantages of Soda, and the benefits of Juices, and vegetables. Informative, interesting, educational, and beautifully written. Highly recommended!

Very worth your time!
By Amazon Customer
I have to admit that this is the first Doreen Virtue book I’ve read. I received the book for free from Hay House Publishing in exchange for writing a review. This review is solely my own opinion.
This title intrigued me because I thought it would compliment my ongoing experiment in writing to my cerebral palsy and further my studies in the mind-body connection. Plus, I am in the midst of a 28 day clean eating program, so I had already begun much of the herbal support and food elimination that is suggested in the book.
I suspended my skepticism about working with angels and dove in. The book is well organized and thought out. It contains prayers to God and the angels to emotionally and physically cleanse body and mind, along with detailed suggestions for flower, crystal and herbal therapies. Virtue suggests journaling thoughts, feelings and questions and consulting the angels about any concerns. She also suggests asking the angels to guide food choices and steer the reader away from allergens.
I have not worked with all of the prayers and therapies, but I have done some journaling and eliminated sugar, coffee and the top allergens (gluten, dairy, soy, corn, eggs and peanuts.) I know from medical tests that I am gluten and lactose intolerant. I am impressed with the authors’ emphasis on physical healing. There are chapters devoted to dairy, gluten, coffee, sugar, smoking and alcohol detox, as well as detox from other addictions. Each chapter walks the reader through a seven day cleanse with detailed steps and prayers for each day.
I remained skeptical about the angels until I did a cord cutting meditation with Archangel Michael. I settled into a quiet space and asked Michael to remove any cords of fear and negative energies from my body. I felt and could see in my mind’s eye dense negative energy in my lower abdomen and low back. I did my best to stay non-judgmental of the experience. When I felt that the cords had been released, I thanked Archangel Michael and came out of the meditation feeling lighter and clearer.
I think ultimately, it does not matter if you believe that the angels are separate entities, or a way to access your own inner wisdom. The book helped me remember that I can ask for help from and be supported by the universe. That reminder alone makes the book well worth your time.

Don't Cry: Stories, by Mary Gaitskill

Mary Gaitskill returns with a luminous new collection of stories -- her first in more than ten years. In ''College Town l980,'' young people adrift in Ann Arbor, Michigan, debate the meaning of personal strength at the start of the Reagan era; in the urban fairy tale ''Mirrorball,'' a young man steals a girl's soul during a one-night stand; and in ''The Little Boy,'' a woman haunted by the death of her husband is finally able to grieve through a mysterious encounter with a needy child. Each story delivers the powerful, original language and the dramatic engagement of the intelligent mind with the craving body -- or of the intelligent body with the craving mind-- that has come to be seen as stunningly emblematic of Gaitskill's fiction.

From Booklist
National Book Award finalist Gaitskill does not write stories for the faint of heart, butit's not the occasional violence or difficult situation that makes the reader uneasy; rather, it is the complete lack of joy in her characters’ lives. From former college students wasting time in Ann Arbor, to hipsters on one-night stands, to would-be mothers trying to adopt in Ethiopia, one character after another struggles and falls and fails to find any relief. Read individually, the stories gathered here can be enjoyed for their believable characters and dialogue, sparse descriptions, and tight craftsmanship, but as a collection, they leave the reader desperate for a glimmer of hope. Still, readers who were moved by Gaitskill’s powerful, emotionally scouring novel Veronica (2005) will be eager to take another journey down some very dark passageways. --Marta Segal Block

“Don't Cry”

Our first day in Addis Ababa we woke up to wedding music playing outside the hotel. We had traveled for 20 hours and we were deeply asleep. The music entered my sleep in the form of moving lights, like fireflies or animate laughter, in a pattern, but a loose and playful one. I was dreaming that I was with Thomas. In the dream, he was very young, and we were chasing a light that had come free of the others, running down a winding path with darkness all around.

When I woke at first I did not know where I was. The music seemed more real than the dingy room; its sound saturated me with happiness and pain. Then I saw Katya and remembered where we were and why. She was already up and standing at the window lifting a shade to peer out—the sun made a warm place on her skin and I felt affection for her known form in this unknown place. She turned and said, “Janice, there's weddings going on outside—plural!”

We went outside. All around our hotel were gardens, and in the gardens were crowds of people dressed in the bright colors of undiluted joy. Brides and grooms were wearing white satin, and the streets were lined with white limousines decked with flowers, and together with so much color, the white also seemed colorful. Little girls in red-and-white crinoline ran past, followed by a laughing woman. Everyone was laughing or smiling, and because I could not tell where the music came from, I had the sensation that it was coming directly from these smiling, laughing people. Katya turned to me and said, “Are we in heaven?”

I replied, “I don't know,” and for a second I meant it.

My husband Thomas had died six months before the trip to Addis Ababa. The music that woke me that first day touched my grief even before I knew it was wedding music. Even in my sleep I could hear love in it; even in my sleep, I could hear loss. I stepped out of the hotel in a state of grief, but when I saw the brides and grooms in their happiness, wonder slowly spread through my grief. It was like seeing my past and a future that was no longer mine but that I was part of anyway.

In the dirty hotel restaurant we had dry brick-like croissants and lots of good fruit—papaya, mangoes, bananas, oranges, and pineapple. The coffee was burnt, so we decided to go to the espresso place we'd been told was just a few blocks away. We never found the place, although we walked a long time. At first, we walked on a crowded street made of pavement, with department stores, an Internet caf, and a grocery with a big Magic Marker drawing (green and red) of fruit and vegetables in the window. Starving wandered freely. The pavement abruptly fell off and gave way to rocks. We saw another wedding party, in a Mercedes decked with rich-colored flowers, moving through a herd of donkeys, the herders lagging behind, talking on their cells. Beggars swarmed around us, shouting and showing us their deformed limbs, their blind eyes. We forgot our espresso. The rocky street gave way to dirt with pools of muddy water. Houses, patched together with tin, plastic, canvas and wood, bulged out, sagged in, lurched and leaned this way, then that. Beggars swarmed us, chanting. Wedding guests in gold pants and silky shirts pushed their broken car through slowly parting pedestrians. A little boy marched along blowing a horn; he was followed by a smaller boy, who was shouting and rhythmically shaking a clutch of bells on a strap. The smell of fresh shit rose up suddenly and mixed with the odors of sweat and cooked meat. An old woman seated in the roots of a giant tree sold bundled sticks and dresses mounted on smiling white mannequins. Trees made soft, blunt, deep green shapes with their boughs. Katya turned to me, her face dazed. “We'd better go back,” she said. “We're getting lost.”

Katya was in Ethiopia to adopt a baby; I was there to help her. Katya asked me to go with her because I am one of her oldest friends, going back to our waitressing days in Manhattan. She is a narrow little woman with a broad, bossy air: ugly-beautiful, full lower lip a bit too pendulous, hips and breasts small but highly charged, black hair big, curly, and shining with secreted oil. The restaurant we worked in was run by Mafia thugs, and they would sometimes come in before the shift to do coke with us. The head thug really liked Katya; he would confide in her and ask her advice and she would console him and boss him around.

In those days I was putting myself through a writing program; she was having experiences. I got married and turned into an English professor who publishes stories in quarterly magazines. She started various businesses, which she either failed at or got bored with and sold. She had family money to begin with, and in spite of the failures along the way, she has actually amassed some money of her own. She now runs a boutique in D.C., which is where she lives. She has made some Ethiopian friends, one of whom, a woman named Meselu, runs a “big woman's” store across the street from Katya's business.

Katya had been thinking of adoption for some time; she didn't want to go through an agency in America because it pissed her off that while agencies give the birth mother full disclosure regarding the adoptive parent, there is no reciprocity. She didn't want to go through a foreign agency because most of them require a two-year wait, and she felt that, at forty-nine, she was already too old. She learned through someone on the Internet—a woman in California who'd already adopted an Ethiopian child—that independent adoptions there were relatively easy. It helped, of course, that Meselu could hook her up with people in Addis Ababa, including a driver named Yonas, who specialized in clients there to adopt.

When Katya asked me if I would go to Africa with her, I said yes, because Thomas had died four months earlier and I had still not gone back to teaching. In the emptiness of my life, it didn't seem to matter what I did; between doing nothing and doing something, it seemed better to do something. Thomas and I had never had children, and, maybe without thinking about it, I wanted to help my friend give a child safe passage. Katya had never been lucky with men and I knew she had always envied my marriage; perhaps I was hoping to balance my loss with something good for her. In any case, before I left I took Thomas' wedding ring from the altar I had made in our bedroom, took my own ring from my finger, and put them both on a gold chain around my neck.

When Yonas came to pick us up at the hotel, he told us that every Saturday in May people in Addis Ababa come out to get married, and that our hotel was an especially popular spot because of the gardens. Yonas was a young man with a beautiful face and a profound feeling of age about him. When we told him how heavenly the weddings had seemed to us, he gravely bobbed his head and made the quick, sharp inhalation that we were beginning to understand as 'yes.' He held the door of his rattling Soviet car for us and said something I couldn't understand. We got in, sank into the broken, reeking cushions, down almost to the floor.

We couldn't go to the orphanage on a Saturday, so Yonas took us up into the mountains, a trip I remember in the way I remember my dream that morning. I remember getting out of the car to stand at the top of a steep street, with big, broken stones on each side of us, and looking down at a jumble of shanties and tiny houses careering up and down a hill. Further out of the city we saw houses made of mud and gray thatch that appeared soft as hair from a distance; there was one house surrounded by a beautiful fence made of light, slender branches of all shapes and sizes linked in a winding, nearly musical pattern, varied by the curves of certain branches that suddenly and softly digressed before returning to the music of the pattern. Big flowers grew through the branches in random places, spilling their pink petals. There was a woman in the yard with a bright red scarf on her head. The sky was full of soft, swollen clouds.

That night we had dinner with Meselu's relatives. We were taken to the house by Meselu's uncle who spoke a little English; we brought huge bundles of clothes, batteries, and toiletries that Meselu had sent. The house was behind a high stone wall with an archway bowered with thick-growing plants.

The head of the family was a matriarch named Zeyneb, who served us a spread with dozens of little meat dishes—goat, beef and lamb in a variety of sauces with a grain called teff. Zeyneb sat at the head of the table in a crimson dress and passed the dishes in a formal manner. Most of her family was there—one of her two daughters, three of her four sons, and six grandchildren. The uncle translated as well as his skill would allow. We couldn't understand a lot of it; we heard something about the election and the government. Zeyneb said something about adoption and things being different than they had been. The grandchildren talked loudly and happily among themselves, listening sideways to the translations of our speech. Zeyneb asked how many children I had. When I said none, one of the little girls looked at me piercingly.

That night we went to bed early—we had to. The power was out and it got too dark to read by 8:30. We lay in the dark and talked for a long time. We talked about the jumbled streets, Zeyneb, the mountains, and the fence—which, we agreed, would cost thousands of dollars in the States. It was almost cold, and so we slept with the windows shut; the muffled street sound had a lulling effect. Katya said she was too excited to sleep, but she drifted off quickly; it was I who stirred all night, unable to sleep or to stay fully awake. The wedding music from the morning crowded my mind, the bright colors and smiles, the running girls, the laughing woman. Cars mingled with donkeys; a little boy blew a horn. Beggars came bursting out of the wedding crowd, shouting. One of them was a boy I had seen that morning, and tried not to notice, a boy with a gouged-out eye socket. We emptied our purses—I gave the gouged boy handfuls of coins—but it was not enough.

I touched the wedding rings around my neck; Thomas appeared to me and sat on the bed. I stretched out my hand to him; the street crowd vanished. I remembered Thomas inside me. Once I said “I want you inside me all the time,” and he answered “I will be.” Children peered around a dark corner—first they were Zeyneb's grandchildren, then they were unborn children waiting for Thomas and me to conceive them. Among them was the boy with the gouged eye, not begging but waiting to be born. “I want you now,” I whispered. Thomas replied, “I am here,” but faintly. Chanting sounded. It was haunting, stern, implacable as a machine made of powerful feelings cut away from their source. Rules, I thought. Punishment: it's coming. Chanting filled the suffocating room. “Shut up!” I hissed, “Just shut the fuck up!”

Katya stirred and murmured “What?”

“This noise, what is it?”

“Zeyneb said it's from the churches. Go back to sleep, it's going to go on all day.”

One of our great short story writers with a new collection, mostly good but one real clunker
By Michael A. Duvernois
Sure, most folks know about Mary Gaitskill for the movie version of Secretary (Secretary), loosely taken from a short story in her collection Bad Behavior (Bad Behavior), but her best works, in my opinion are her novels Two Girls, Fat and Thin (Two Girls Fat and Thin) and Veronica (Veronica). Those are, respectively, on S&M and Ayn Rand, and on AIDS and the release from a gray world.

Here we have the new collection of short stories: College Town 1980, Folk Song, A Dream of Men, The Agonized Face, Mirror Ball, Today I'm Yours, The Little Boy, The Arms and Legs of the Lake, Description, and Don't Cry.

The ones that stood out for me included "College Town 1980" where the college town is Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the people there look to find meaning where they can. (And decide that Ann Landers is correct.) Also, the title story, in which a recent widow joins her friend who is trying to adopt a child in Ethiopia and is nearly overwhelmed by her guilt from infidelity. Many of the characters find themselves in bleak emotional waters, adrift, and find the oddest sorts of floats to support themselves, and perhaps even bring job.

On the other hand, the contrived Iraq War tale in "The Arms and Legs of the Lakes" brings the writing seminar sort of mix of humanity onto a train. Three veterans, an antiwar activist, the uncle of a soldier, and newlyweds enroute to, wait for it, Niagara Falls.

Gaitskill is usually better than that, and most of the stories are quite good. If you've tried her previous work and enjoyed it, you know you'll buy this. If not, perhaps a used copy of Bad Behavior or Because They Wanted To (Because They Wanted to: Stories) would be a better introduction. Either of those I would rank about 4 1/2 stars. Some off moments, but nothing as silly as "Arms and Legs and Cliches."

Fascinating but uneven
By margot
Mary Gaitskill's misfortune is to be the only Mary Gaitskill working the street. I mean she's alone out there, with her odd vision and idiom, not part of any tradition or school. Her narrative line is unpredictable, which can be very trying on the reader.

It is probably even more trying on the writer. Here is Gaitskill, marching on through the jungle, making her own way, with no one before her or beside her. No wonder both she and her characters always seem lost and despairing. Critics aren't an awful lot of help to her; they lazily slot her as wilfully perverse, when all she does is paint what she sees. If she positioned herself as a memoirist or social critic or writer of romantic fiction, she'd have an easier time of it.

Most of the stories here struck me as unfinished and confused in their direction. One exception, "The Arms and Legs of the Lake," is a near-perfect gem, but even so, it is experimental in technique and difficult to read simply as a short story. Basically, eight or ten characters are introduced and interact in the course of a train journey. None of them are given any description by the narrator; all exposition is given from the various characters' points of view. There is a central character with the appropriately anonymous name of Jim Smith, and we quickly learn he is a recent Iraq veteran. Most readers will immediately form a mental image of him, an image that will become more and more wrong as the story progresses. He is a slight black man on the verge of middle-age, perhaps a little crazy, perhaps feebleminded. The other characters project upon him their admiration or pity or contempt, and then make biased and critical judgments of each other. Best character of all is the black conductor on the train, inwardly snorting with contempt both for poor Jim and for the bien-pensant white folks who regard him patronizingly as a symbol of his race.

The whole story is a marvelous cats-cradle of contradictory viewpoints. It stands out in this collection because it's the only time Gaitskill ventures outside her usual garden-patch of ineffectual students and love-weary, aging women. Nevertheless it is scarcely more than a daring, irritating experiment, a tour-de-force of literary tricks and repellent characters. You don't want to meet these people again, and you don't much care what happens to them after the story ends.

The title story is irritating in a different way. Like most Gaitskill stories, it runs on two levels, that of the external action, and that of the main characters' memories and daydreams. Here the external action is a high-concept black comedy. A shallow, self-centered woman has decided to go get herself an Ethiopian baby. That by itself was enough to set my teeth on edge, though I could see Gaitskill meant to irritate me. But what was she was she cooking up? This woman who wants to buy an Ethiopian baby is accompanied by her recently widowed best friend, who imagines the trip will be a nice distraction, a therapeutic vacation. But--bwahaha!--of course it is not. The women arrive in Ethiopia just as this third-world hellhole is erupting into civil war. As their surroundings become ever more grotesque and unendurable, the friend begins to recall all the bad parts of her late marriage--her husband's family's dislike of her, his moodswings, his long descent into Alzheimer's, her own unfaithfulness. Even the hell of Ethiopia and the sound of gunfire cannot drown out these brooding thoughts. There's your classic Gaitskill motif: disaster and collapse on the outside, confusion and despair on the inside.

A Mixed Bag of Stories from an Author Who Deserves Attention
By David Keymer
Gaitskill's first two books, a collection of short stories, Bad Behavior, and a novel, Two Girls, Fat and Thin, were exceptional. Our son assigned her second novel, Veronica, a National Book Award nominee, as required reading in a philosophy course and he's got good taste in such matters. Her fourth book, Because They Wanted To, was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award. In short, Gaitskill is for real and a very good writer.

Don't Cry is her first collection of short stories in ten years. The best stories are quite good but overall the collection is uneven. "College Town 1980" is exceptional. It is difficult to describe except to say that Gaitskill paints a young woman's failed relations and personal problems but reveals the steely resolve that underlies her unhappiness. "Folk Song" is an extended reflection on two extreme incidents: the television interview of a convicted serial murderer and the announcement by a woman that she is going to break the world record for consecutive sex acts by having sex with a thousand men in a row. "Today I'm Yours" describes the obsession of a married woman with an on again off again lesbian lover. In "Don't Cry," a widow (her husband died of Alzheimer's) accompanies a friend to Somalia to adopt a child and mourns an act of infidelity. Equally striking but somehow artificial -it reads at moments like a creative writing workshop exercise--is "The Agonized Face": a woman attends a literary festival as a stringer for a little magazine and observes the writers on display there. From there on, the quality drops. "The Arms and Legs of the Lake," which intertwines the inner thoughts of three men riding on a train, two of them veterans of the Iraq war and the third a veteran of WWII, is the least successful story in the collection. In "Mirror Ball," a local rock icon has a one-night stand with a young girl and he steals her soul, which flutters around his apartment disturbing him in his self-absorption: the conceit isn't completely successful and some of the prose passages are dreadful, but Gaitskill is one of those rare writers whose stories grab you even when they fail.

There are commonalities in Gaitskill's fiction. 1. She's more at ease describing women than men. The men in "The Arms and Legs of the Lake," the weakest story in the book, don't seem authentic where her women almost always seem real -extreme, but real. 2. She often writes about sex in its polymorphous forms. Sometimes her descriptions of sex acts work. Other times, they embarrass -not because she's describing sex but because she overwrites. 3. All of her characters come from damaged backgrounds. They abuse themselves to continue their abasement. 4. When Gaitskill is on a roll, she writes wonderful description but the description is just as often overwritten --in "Mirror Ball," for instance. But in concreteness and detail and the heat they generate, her descriptive passages usually evoke the strong, even excessive emotions she wants to share with the reader.

Her protagonists consider themselves grotesque, but they're grotesque in the ways that vulnerable human beings often are grotesque: seeing themselves as unattractive, flawed, separated not just from the idealized norms they strive to embrace but from emotional contact with the people around them. Her characters are isolates. And their isolation pains them. In "College Town 1980," the first and the best story in the collection, the protagonist's emotions are portrayed thus: "She felt like the kind of retarded person who`s smart enough to know she's retarded." In "Mirror Ball," a needy, unfulfilled young woman is described by the semi-rock star who uses her and drops her as "a sack of things without a sack."

In discussing this book on the phone with my son. I praised Gaitskill's authorial vision. She cuts through platitude and makes us see people differently than the faces they craft for public consumption. He pointed out that Gaitskill's protagonists have much in common with the protagonists of Poe's grotesque fictions: they know they're damaged but don't know how to fix it; their loss is expressed in hyper-charged prose that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't but is always worth taking seriously.

I had this thought. In many ways, Gaitskill is Raymond Carver's mirror image. Where his prose is minimalist, hers is maximalist. His characters retreat into inarticulateness; her characters use more complicated coping mechanisms. But they write about the same experience of inadequacy, isolation, loss, bereavement.

Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler: A True Love Story Rediscovered, by Trudi Kanter

The astonishing true journey ofTrudi Kanter, an Austrian Jew, whose courage, resourcefulness, and perseverance kept both her and her beloved safeduring the Nazi invasion is a rediscovered masterpiece.

“ FOR EVEN IN NAZI VIENNA, Trudi realized, women still looked in the mirror. . . . She knows that even in the bleak darkness, we feel, love, desire. She left no child (she and Walter tried, with no success); her hats are long lost, but her book is her legacy, discovered once again.” —From the introduction by Linda Grant, a uthor of The Clothes on Their Backs, The Thoughtful Dresser and We Had It So Good

In 1938 Trudi Kanter, stunningly beautiful, chic and charismatic, was a hat designer for the best-dressed women in Vienna. She frequented the most elegant cafs. She had suitors. She flew to Paris to see the latest fashions. And she fell deeply in love with Walter Ehrlich, a charming and romantic businessman. But as Hitler’s tanks rolled into Austria, the world this young Jewish couple knew collapsed, leaving them desperate to escape.

In prose that cuts straight to the bone, Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler tells the true story of Trudi’s astonishing journey from Vienna to Prague to blitzed London seeking safety for her and Walter amid the horror engulfing Europe. It was her courage, resourcefulness and perseverance that kept both her and her beloved safe during the Nazi invasion and that make this an indelible memoir of love and survival.

Sifting through a secondhand bookshop in London, an English editor stumbled upon this extraordinary book, and now, though she died in 1992, the world has a second chance to discover Trudi Kanter’s enchanting story. In these pages she is alive—vivid, tenacious and absolutely unforgettable.

From Booklist
Kanter’s jaunty title reflects the unusually breezy nature of this Holocaust-era memoir. The author, a Jewish hatmaker, recalls her efforts to flee Nazi-occupied Vienna with her beloved paramour in tow. While the inherent danger of the situation creates a compelling subtext that strengthens the narrative, Kanter’s often matter-of-fact tone and her keen observations about men, fashion, and sex are a reminder that many seemingly insignificant yet entirely human facets of life go on despite the cruel realities of imminent warfare. From Paris to Vienna to London, Kanter creates a vibrant tapestry of her incredible odyssey through one of the darkest periods in contemporary history. Romance, passion, and peril create an authentically vivid backdrop for this intimate chronicle originally published (and quickly forgotten) in England in 1984. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
“This one memoir is a generous- spirited book. Its many delightful moments, as well as its almost matter-of-fact description of menace and impending danger, stay long in the mind.” (Wall Street Journal)

“What makes the book so instantly mesmerizing is Trudi Kanter herself, who fashioned sentences just the way she fashioned hats as a milliner in late 1930s Vienna—each a dazzling, delicate object of delight.” (Oprah.com, Book of the Week)

“TrudiKanter's memoir is blessed with a wonderful title and an even better backstory…her spirited charm will win you over.” (USA Today)

“In a rediscovered memoir, the charmed life of designer Trudi Kanter is split open as the Nazis claim Vienna and terror reigns. Every Holocaust story is worth remembering, and Trudi's is unique—she refuses to lose her vision of what the world should be at its very best: a place of red roses, Paris avenues, and above all else, true love.” —Alice Hoffman

“There have been many books by and aboutrefugees from the Third Reich…but there can be few if any that manage tocombine terror and death with such sheer frivolity as this engaging memoir….Ms. Kanter’s attraction to the light rather than the storm clouds thatbedeviled so much of her existence makes her book a happy read.” (Washington Times)

“With anatural writing style, a talent for re-creating the details of daily life(especially the fashions), Trudi, who died in 1992, comes alive for the reader, creating what becomes a valuable piece of social history. But more than allthis, her memoir is a poem of love to her husband, to the cities of Vienna andParis, and to a way of life that, in the twinkling of an eye, completelydisappeared.” (Chicago Jewish Star)

“Some Girls,Some Hats and Hitler does not minimize the horrors ofwar or the Holocaust, but through Kanter's delightful hopefulness and spare, riveting writing, it presents an unusual memoir of an era that must not beforgotten.” (Shelf Awareness)

“This Holocaust memoir is more a tale of lovethan a horror story of Nazi-occupied Europe...the words
and imagery flow beautifully.” (Publishers Weekly)

“From Paris to Vienna to London, Kantercreates a vibrant tapestry of her incredible odyssey through one of the darkestperiods in contemporary history. Romance, passion, and peril create anauthentically vivid backdrop for this intimate chronicle.” (Booklist)

“TrudiKanter relates the emotional roller coaster she was on in attempting to get toEngland with her parents and the love of her life, Walter. The reader sharestheir terror and resultant cycles of inertia, hope and finally galvanization ofemotional resources that Ms. Kanter, her family and friends all brought tobear.” (Jewish Book World)

"Nothing undid beauty and romance like the onslaught of World War II. And yet in Trudi Kanter's elegant memoir Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler love and grace survive the horror in Western Europe. What an enchanting book. What a gem. I could not put it down.” --Jennifer Gilmore, author of The Mothers and Something Red

"This Holocaust memoir is more a tale of love than a horror story of Nazi-occupied Europe...the words
and imagery flow beautifully." -Publishers Weekly

"Distilled through the lens of a sartorial dignitary, Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler offers an illuminating chronicle of narrow wartime escapes, calamity, and ingenuity. What makes this account all the more revealing is its candor regarding the persistence of mortal tendencies amid even the most disastrous of situations. Sometimes there is vanity, sometimes jealousy, and often, in the most unexpected of places, beauty of both the aesthetic and human varieties." --Alicia Oltuski, author of Precious Objects

"A fascinating romance, a tribute to the love that beat Hitler." --Daily Post

“A wonderful memoir of a young milliner in pre-World War II Vienna who flees to London with the man she loves when Hitler’s tanks invade. Despite the tragic subject matter, this warm and vividly humorous autobiography is a must for anyone interested in fashion, history – and love.” —Bella

“For even in Nazi Vienna, Trudi realized, women still looked in the mirror….Her book is also about the appetite for life, for clothes and hats, and food, and cocktails, and sex, and furnishings, and good company, and conversation. She knew that even in the bleak darkness, we feel, love, desire. She left no child (she and Walter tried, with no success); her hats are long lost, but her book is her legacy, discovered once again.”

What a Smart Lady!
By Cynthia Dunn
The story behind this book is an unusual one. It was printed by a small press, went out of print and was found in a used bookshop and reprinted. The publisher can't even find a copyright holder.

While not the best written of Holocaust memoirs, it does give you a different perspective. Trudi Ehrlich was a well-to-do Jewish milliner in Vienna when she first heard the rumblings from her friends to get out of town. Quickly. Though the life she leads is somewhat trivial in the greater scheme of things, she's really clever and manages to get herself, her husband and her parents to London. I wasn't crazy about her husband, who is in no great rush to leave Austria. He wants to think it over. Luckily for him, he hitched himself to the right woman.

I liked the book but didn't love it. I think if you read this, you should then read "The Hare with Amber Eyes" by Edmund De Waal. It's also about a rich Jewish family in Vienna who lost everything. Beautifully written and extremely informative.

A Rediscovered Memoir and Love Story from WWII
By Rob Hardy
In March 1938 came the _Anschluss_, the march of thousands of Nazi troops to reclaim Austria for the Fuehrer who had been born there. In Vienna, a witness to the intrusion was Trudi Kanter, a young milliner with a showroom in the city. She was half Jewish, and she was to witness the rampage and the outrages, and she was eventually able to get herself, her husband, and her parents out to safety in England. She brought out a self-published survivor's memoir in 1984, which almost no one seems to have noticed. An editor rediscovered it years ago in a second-hand bookshop, and at last it is going to be noticed. _Some Girls, Some Hats, and Hitler: A True Love Story Rediscovered_ (Scribner) gives Trudi's story, with its unforgettable views of the beau monde of Vienna, its frightening account of the Nazi goons moving in, and the surprising fight she had to make for her husband and father's freedom after they all got to England. Trudi is sharp, observant, funny, and full of love for her Walter; the book works as an important memoir of a unique time but also as a personal love letter. Sadly, Trudi died twenty years ago and could not know how many people are going to be affected by her work this time.

Trudi was a beautiful young woman whose bright red hair was always crowned by one of her chic hats. She had a hat manufactory and showroom in Vienna, employing twelve young women. Trudi's appetite for color, for pastry, and for male company are constants in these pages, which benefit from the keen observation of someone who worked in fashion. She happened to be in Paris in March 1938, doing her buying for the coming season, when she saw the headlines that the Germans had prepared to enter Austria. Her Parisian friends were shocked that she would consider a return home, but it was where her work, her Walter, and her parents were, and she could not stay away. Walter may have had many charms, but Trudi had repeatedly to make up for his passivity even when their situation was obviously dire. There was an epic of denunciation as janitors and maids took their revenge. Friends and customers disappeared. There were swastikas all over. Even the superficial hat business reflected the change and Trudi's hats became less gay than the ones she had seen in her Paris excursion: "I used more veiling to hide women's eyes. To hide their sorrow." It fell to Trudi to start hunting up visas, jobs abroad, exit permits, kind tax inspectors, and influential people in the millinery world. Her resourcefulness worked, but her family's problems were not over once they got to England. One of the many distressing parts of this memoir is to learn how Walter and Trudi's father were treated in their new home. All Austrian men were arrested and put into internment camps. Her uncomprehending father said, "But all the refugees are on England's side! We want England to win!" Nonetheless, as enemy aliens they were sent to a camp near Liverpool, where they could not have books or radios or visitors, and their mattresses were scant straw. Trudi had a new round of campaigning to get them out, and was eventually successful, but she could not change attitudes. When they were in the bomb shelter during a night of horrendous destruction, some Briton picked a fight with Walter whom he felt did not deserve the protection that an Englishman did.

I would love to know more about Trudi's life, and whether she returned to Vienna for visits or kept up friendships there after the war. Sadly, it seems as if this book, neglected when she published it, is all we will have. We know that Walter died in 1960, and that Trudi remarried, and that she died in 1992, and that she had no children. When the publishers of this volume tried to find out more about her, there was little else that could be found. Even the holder of the copyright of the original edition is unknown (the colophon page of this edition asks anyone with information to come forward). Trudi is gone forever, and had no idea that her heartbreaking book with its original eyewitness stories was to be a priceless legacy.

This Book Deserves More Respect
By John P. Rooney
"Some Girls, Some Hats And Hitler" by Trudi Kanter
Scribner, New York, 1982/2012

This book is subtitled, "A True Love Story". In many ways, it IS a love story, the love between Trudi and Walter. In other ways, the book is a concise history of the Nazi aggression from the 1938 Anschluss of Austria until the end of the war in Europe in 1945.

Trudi was part of a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria, when Nazi Germany began to expand and no country dared to stop them. In a personal way, Trudi documents the confusion and indecision of her family and so many other Jews. Trudi wanted to run from Nazi occupied Vienna, but found it difficult to convince her lover, Walter, and her parents. The parents were older and settled in their ways.

Bit by bit, Trudi explains how she worked, bribed and stood in line to obtain visas for herself and for Walter, so they could go to England. Using her hat business as a ploy, she gets to England first, and then strives to get Walter over. As she settles down in England, she uses her millinery contacts to arrange for English visas for her parents.

Every now and then, Trudi Kanter begins a chapter with a date. What struck me was September 3 1939. Then I realized that that was the day that England (and France) declared war on Germany. Her book is a mini-history of the important dates of the war in Europe. The author records how the English company took advantage of her hat designing skills and then paid her a minimum amount of money.

There were personal aspects of the book, including the joy of having her husband (she married Walter) Join her in England, and then her parents. Walter designed an important unit in a British aircraft, but did not take out a patent on the item. He also helped rescue people during an air raid. Despite all this Walter and then Trudi's father were interned as "enemy aliens". All these personal reminisces make the book an interesting and poignant history of one family during World War II.
