Curing Health Care is failed medicine for what ails healthcare
By Dr. Ira Williams (Consignment)
The authors attempt to compare two distinctly different "systems" by using industrial models as possible sources of safety methods that can benefit patient care. All of their models possess an organizational structure with a point of highest authority and points of delegated authority throughout their organization. Our nation's healthcare delivery system is, and always been a non-system, devoid of any aspect of an organizational structure. Curing Health Care, its very title, stands in stark contrast to the fact that the estimate of needless hospital deaths today is reported to be twice the annual estimate of such tragedies in 1990. Curing Health Care has made no discernible contribution to the efforts to improve the quality of healthcare and patient safety.

Curing Health Care should yield thought provoking ideas about the "possibility" of a better health care system
By kegobucks
While I respect Dr. Williams review, I wholeheartedly disagree with his conclusion. Curing Health Care should yield thought provoking ideas about the "possibility" of a better health care system. Idealized goals may stand in stark contrast to current realities, yet it is those type of forward and optimistic thoughts like Dr. Berwick proposes, that pave the way for the health improvements we all desire. I'd like to know what Dr. Williams contribution to care has been, or is it rather, a drumbeat of critique, while others, myself included are challenged by the possibilities and never dissuaded by the challenges we face. If it is your first introduction to Dr. Berwick, I would recommend his book, Escape Fire as a preferred read on the possibilities that exist to improve healthcare. Dr. Jeff Kegarise

Muye Dobo Tongji : Comprehensive Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts of Ancient Korea, by Duk-Moo Yi, Je-Ga Park

In 1789, King Chongjo, ruler of the Yi dynasty, ordered General Yi Duk-moo to compile an official textbook on all martial art forms present in Korea. The result, the Muye Dobo Tongji, is the only surviving classical text on the Korean arts of war. Based on the earliest known Korean martial arts treatise, the Muye Chebo(1599), the Muye Dobo Tongji clearly shows the influence of neighboring Japanese and Chinese armies. Through hundreds of wars and invasions, Korean soldiers adapted battlefield skills and tactics from their enemies, creating a unique system. Organized into 24 disciplines comprised of empty hand fighting, weaponry and horsemanship, this is an accurate historical snapshot of the warrior arts of the late 18th century. This marks the first time this volume is available in English. Carefully translated from the original text and illustrated with reproductions of ancient woodblock carvings, this book provides fascinating insights into Korea's martial arts legacy.

Carefully translated from the orginal, this book provides fascinating insights into Korea's martial arts legacy. --Martial Arts Combat Sports Magazine, February 2001

From the Publisher
In 1789, King Jungjo, ruler of the Yi dynasty, ordered General Yi Duk-moo to compile an official textbook on all martial art forms then present in Korea to preserve them for future generations. The result, the Muye Dobo Tongji, is the only surviving classical text on the Korean arts of war. Based on the earliest known Korean martial arts treatise, the Muye Chebo written in 1599, the Muye Dobo Tongji clearly shows the influence of the neighboring Japanese and Chinese armies.

Through hundreds of wars and invasions, Korean soldiers adapted battlefield skills and tactics from their enemies, creating a unique system of their own. Organized into 24 distinct disciplines comprised of empty hand fighting, weaponry and horsemanship, this book is an accurate historical snapshot of the warrior arts of the hermit kingdom in the late 18th century.

The first five sections of the book detail the authors reasoning for publishing the manual, the king’s directions to the authors, the guidelines used by the authors in selecting material for inclusion, a collection of essential strategic documents and oral teachings, and background information on Mo Won-ui and Chuk Kye-kwang, military generals and scholars whose writings are extensively quoted in the work. The final section is a listing of the reference works used by the authors.

Book One comprises the arts that were originally published in the Muye Chebo (Martial Arts Illustrations) in 1592. This book establishes the format for the remainder of the work: each weapon is documented with an illustration of the Korean, Chinese and Japanese versions where applicable, followed by a compilation of references to the weapon in historical documents, a discussion of the common uses of the weapon illustrated by line drawings and finally the original manuals and comprehensive illustrations (in Chinese).

Books Two and Three comprise the arts added to the Muye Chebo when it was revised and published as the Muye Shinbo (New Illustrations of Marital Arts) in 1759. The arts added in these two sections reflect the influence of the invading Japanese armies and borrow heavily from the Japanese sword arts.

Book Four was added in 1789 when the final work was published as the Muye Dobo Tongji. Book Four contains the only documented empty hand art plus the Korean version of polo and the documentation of acrobatics on horseback, both of which were added at the King’s direction. The final two sections are illustrations of the clothing worn by the military during practice of the documented arts and a comparative chart documenting the differences in practice of the arts within the four branches of the military.

The release of The Comprehensive Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts of Ancient Korea marks the first time this volume is available in English. Carefully translated from the original text and illustrated with reproductions of ancient woodblock carvings, this book provides fascinating insights into Korea’s martial arts legacy.

From the Inside Flap
According to historic documents, archery was the only officially sanctioned martial art practiced by soldiers during the early years of the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910), a period during which the practice of martial arts was looked downed upon and generally discouraged. After the Japanese invasion (1592-1598), King Sunjo (1567-1608) acquired a Chinese martial arts manual called Kihyo Shinsu written by Chuk Kye-kwang of the Ming Dynasty. He took a personal interest in the arts and subsequently invited the Ming military officers for a demonstration of their fighting methods. The king ordered his military officer Han Kyo to compile six fighting methods for further study. They were later published collectively under the title Muye Jebo (Martial Arts Illustrations).

During the reign of King Youngjo (1724-1776), the publication of Muye Jebo was revised and renamed Muye Shinbo (Martial Arts New Illustrations) with twelve additional fighting methods added. It was King Jungjo (1776-1800) who added six more fighting methods and completed the Muye Dobo Tongji (Comprehensive Illustrated Manual of Martial Arts) in 1790. He intended to strengthen the national military forces by training soldiers daily and systematically. It is interesting to note that they included not only Chinese fighting methods in the manual but also the Japanese sword methods which had been totally ignored at the beginning of the dynasty. According to his writings, King Jungjo believed that, “Through diligently practicing these methods and mastering strategy, the soldiers protecting the capital and the military officers will become agile warriors and loyal soldiers who will not abandon their country. My intention of publishing this expanded volume of military tactics is to record this instruction for posterity.”

A martial-arts book worth waiting 210 years for.
By Alan M. Hochberg
As a White Belt in Korean martial arts, I learned that "the very first complete martial arts book was written [during the Yi dynasty]. This most important book is called `Mooyae Dobo Tongji'. It was written in 1790 A.D...." As a Brown Belt, I was tested on these facts. Beyond memorizing the name and date, I wished--ever since I first heard about it--that I could see a copy of this book, which surely held all sorts of ancient secrets. I was disappointed to learn that it had never been translated into English, and, in fact, was written in an archaic form of Korean.
Imagine my delight when I found out that Dr. Sang H. Kim had completed a translation, which became available late last year through martial-arts publisher Turtle Press. I can now say I've read the Mooyae Dobo Tongji. I found it fascinating, inspiring...and a little bit frustrating as well.
The Muye Dobo Tongji was commissioned by King Jungjo of Korea as a military manual. The authors were given access to the royal library, and told to consolidate dozens of ancient (in 1790!) manuscripts into a comprehensive fighting system. As they point out several times, their sources were often incomplete, unclear, and contradictory. But with warrior spirit, they did the best they could. The Muye Dobo Tongji is certainly a well-organized book.
The Muye Dobo Tongji consists of some forewords by the authors and translator, a section on the history of Korean martial arts and martial-arts manuscripts, and four "books" describing twenty-four "systems" of martial arts. The forewords and historical sections are enlightening, and contain wisdom that applies to modern times. Sometimes the wisdom is veiled in the peculiar form of English that seems to result from translations of Oriental languages. For example: "When I asked about simplicity, Hu replied, `Simplicity means first of all courage, secondly power, thirdly spirit, and lastly speed.'"
The twenty-four "systems" are mainly what we would refer to as "weapons forms", although there are chapters on fist fighting, horsemanship, etc. Some of the forms are two-person combat drills. There are hundreds of wonderful, expressive illustrations and diagrams from wood-block prints. It is interesting to note that these fighters did not have Bruce Lee-type bodies, and there was no shame in showing a nicely rounded belly.
The pictures and descriptions of the weapons are great. The weapons range from short knives and various swords to 15-foot-long spears, to a multiple-tip bamboo spear designed to be used with poison on its many sharp points.
The instructions for the forms themselves, which make up the bulk of text, are the frustrating part. The instructions range from the precise ("Thrust to the rear with the right hand and foot in front.") to the emphatic ("Hand and sword should be as fast as lightning.") to the colorful ("Lunge with a duck-like stride to thrust and strike to the waist, like white monkey coming out of his cave.") to the undecipherable ("Make the Goose Wing Posture...Punch horizontally like an ox on his back roaring at the sky.") I would love to know if anyone has deciphered the text enough to actually execute any of the forms described in the book.
Having said that, I regard the Muye Dobo Tongji as a valuable edition to my martial-arts library. Although the details are elusive, it is easy to see that our modern Tang Soo Do, and probably other styles, are derived from this historic book. We carry on the tradition that was so important to King Jungjo, Yi Duk-moo, Park Je-ga, and Dr. Kim. And some things haven't changed in 210 years. Although our shields are plastic instead of wisteria and bamboo, the key to success is still learning those forms, developing courage, power, spirit, and speed, and then practicing, practicing, practicing...

Long Awaited Historical Manuscript!
By C. J. Hardman
For years Korean stylists have heard about the Mu Ye Do Bo Tong Ji (MYDBTJ). FINALLY, we can not only see illustrations from the original woodcuts, but read a decent English translation of the work. Sang H. Kim has done more in the popular martial arts media (with the possible exception of He Yong Kimm) to explain Korean martial arts to the general public than anyone else. It says a lot that in the year 2000, someone (Kim) finally found it worthwhile to share the MYDBTJ with the folks who have heard so much about how it impacted the development of their martial art (tae kwon do, hapkido, etc).
Compiled from a variety of (credited) Chinese military texts by court official Lee, Dok-mu, the MYDBTJ came into use in Korea during the year 1790, Yi Dynasty. This 400 page volume offers us an uncommon view of actual practical martial skill utilized in days past, and surprisingly for many of us, finally dispells the myth of the importance of empty handed fighting among warriors of days past. For with the exception of a single chapter (pg 311-332), the entire focus of this volume is upon drilling with weapons (sword, staff, pole weapons, polo, horsemanship, etc)! It is of interest to note that in this section, mention is made of sources that refer both to the Shaolin method and death point striking.
For a truely excellent perspective on the MYDBTJ, a recommended read is the article "Korea's Mu Yei Do Bo Tong Ji: A Sample of Martial Arts training in the Yi Dynasty" by John Della Pia in _Journal of Asian Martial Arts_ Vol. 3 #2 (1994). I should also mention that although the MYDBTJ is compiled from CHINESE documents there are many people who in recent years have used the MYDBTJ as a guide in trying to re-create old-style "native" Korean martial arts, among them Hwang Kee of the Moo Duk Kwan, various Hapkido and taekwondo teachers and others in Korea who have created both empty handed and sword forms based upon their unique interpretations of the sequences contained in this manual. It is interesting to obsrve that virtually none of these independent interpretations agree with one another in form or application, suggesting that even folks with the benefit of growing up immersed in Korean language and culture have difficulty understanding this 210 year old work. This is due in part to vagueness of the illustrations and the terms used to describe the techniques, and the fact that it was originally written in classical Chinese. The terms include a vernacular which probably referred to commonly known techniques that needed no further explanation for an audience of 18 century soldiers. The unfortunate fact today is that native Korean martial arts with the exception of taek kyun (kicking), ssireum (wrestling), and archery have been lost to us as have the specifics concerning the skills shown in these manuals drawn from overwhealmingly Chinese sources. Unfortunately, nothing outside of Korea has been published on either Taek Kyun, Ssireum, or Korean archery.
I highly recommend this volume to ANYONE engaged in martial arts practice (regardless of the nationalistic identity of your respective art). It will offer a unique historical perspective on pre-modern Asian military preparation and drill which is simply unavailable from other sources. You now have the opportunity to form your own opinions and draw your own conclusions from this fascinating historical document.

A gem of a book for historical weaponry enthusiasts!
By Plotinus
Wow! What an awesome book! I have always, as far as I can remember since beginning my martial arts training 15 years ago, wanted to know how martial arts were REALLY practiced back when they were really used in warfare. This book is a complete answer to the question. Now, many of you, if you live in the Western world, are probably most familiar with Japanese arts like Judo, Aikido, Kendo and Karate (originally meant "Chinese-hand", and came from the Ryukyu islands). This book, of course, is Korean, but that should in no way diminish its interest for you. Korea was a unified kingdom ever since about 700 AD. Japan arguably never truly was until the Meiji restoration in the 19th Century. So, the Koreans produced a textbook for their military whereas the Japanese kept their techniques secret from each other, and there are few traditions today in Japan that keep them alive (Kendo, Judo and the rest are modern creations meant for modern times). This is also, naturally, the case in Korea as well, BUT there is this book that has preserved the ancient techniques as they were back then for us today. The book describes in detail many series of techniques performed with the whole gamut of weapons, from fists to two-sword techniques on horseback. It even describes contests and games that can be used to sharpen skill and these include things, interestingly enough, like soccer and polo among others. I think in most cases it would not be possible to simply pick up the book and recreate whole forms in the backyard, but you can certainly learn and practice alot of individual techniques with the book in hand or conveniently placed nearby. In this way you can learn many of the techniques used by the ancient soldiers of Korea in their battles against Chinese, Yalu tribesmen, Japanese pirates and invading Mongols. I found the section on the Yedo (the so-called "short sword" which is what the Japanese call the Katana) to be particularly useful due to its detailed explanations of dozens of postures and attack/defense techniques. Generally, the Korean arts have received much less attention than the Japanese and Chinese, and this is probably due to the fact that the Japanese came up with popular sporting versions of their arts earlier than the Koreans and that Chinese culture is so strong worldwide through the cinema etc. The fact of the matter is that the Koreans beat off both the Chinese and the Japanese repeatedly throughout history, having been conquered only once before the 20th Century, and that was by the Mongols, whose victorious cavalry techniques they later adopted. During the Japanese invasions of the late 16th Century, the Koreans were first caught off guard, but soon rallied and through guerilla action on land by warrior monks and soldiers, and through armoured naval technology and tactics at sea defeated the Japanese in spite of the fact that they had the advantage of being equipped with the modern Portuguese-style arquebus and cannon. Another thing I really like about the book is that it speaks well of Chinese and Japanese techniques, many of which are adopted by the authors for instruction to the Korean troops. Rather than be held up by silly pettiness and pride, the scholars of this book make full use of other nations' techniques wherever they are useful. "Know thy enemy, know thyself" as Sun Tzu wrote. Foreign weapons are also displayed and described, and the history of each weapon is given as exhaustively as possible from available sources. If you are the sort of person who always wondered how Korean halberds, swords, spears, shields, staves, and so on were used, and you want to learn how to use them yourself, this is THE BOOK.

Pound Foolish: Exposing the Dark Side of the Personal Finance Industry, by Helaine Olen

If you’ve ever bought a personal finance book, watched a TV show about stock picking, listened to a radio show about getting out of debt, or attended a seminar to help you plan for your retirement, you’ve probably heard some version of these quotes:

“What’s keeping you from being rich? In most cases, it is simply a lack of belief.” —SUZE ORMAN, The Courage to Be Rich

“Are you latte-ing away your financial future?” —DAVID BACH, Smart Women Finish Rich

“I know you’re capable of picking winning stocks and holding on to them.” —JIM CRAMER, Mad Money

They’re common refrains among personal finance gurus. There’s just one problem: those and many similar statements are false.

For the past few decades, Americans have spent billions of dollars on personal finance products. As salaries have stagnated and companies have cut back on benefits, we’ve taken matters into our own hands, embracing the can-do attitude that if we’re smart enough, we can overcome even daunting financial obstacles. But that’s not true.

In this meticulously reported and shocking book, journalist and former financial columnist Helaine Olen goes behind the curtain of the personal finance industry to expose the myths, contradictions, and outright lies it has perpetuated. She shows how an industry that started as a response to the Great Depression morphed into a behemoth that thrives by selling us products and services that offer little if any help.

Olen calls out some of the biggest names in the business, revealing how even the most respected gurus have engaged in dubious, even deceitful, practices—from accepting payments from banks and corporations in exchange for promoting certain products to blaming the victims of economic catastrophe for their own financial misfortune. Pound Foolish also disproves many myths about spending and saving, including:

  • Small pleasures can bankrupt you: Gurus popularized the idea that cutting out lattes and other small expenditures could make us millionaires. But reducing our caffeine consumption will not offset our biggest expenses: housing, education, health care, and retirement.
  • Disciplined investing will make you rich: Gurus also love to show how steady investing can turn modest savings into a huge nest egg at retirement. But these calculations assume a healthy market and a lifetime without any setbacks—two conditions that have no connection to the real world.
  • Women need extra help managing money: Product pushers often target women, whose alleged financial ignorance supposedly leaves them especially at risk. In reality, women and men are both terrible at handling finances.
  • Financial literacy classes will prevent future economic crises: Experts like to claim mandatory sessions on personal finance in school will cure many of our money ills. Not only is there little evidence this is true, the entire movement is largely funded and promoted by the financial services sector.

Weaving together original reporting, interviews with experts, and studies from disciplines ranging from behavioral economics to retirement planning, Pound Foolish is a compassionate and compelling book that will change the way we think and talk about our money.

From Booklist
“The personal finance and investment industry is a juggernaut, a part of both the ascendant financial services sector of our economy and the ever-booming self-help arena,” states Olen, personal finance writer. Readers learn about Sylvia Porter, whom Olen describes as the “mother of the personal financial industrial complex.” Porter, by the 1960s, had a daily column in which she explained stocks, bonds, and budgeting to millions of Americans. From that beginning mushroomed financial therapy (psychotherapy, life coaching, and financial planning), which originated in the 1970s and caught substantial media attention after the 2008 financial debacle. Explaining the shortcomings of financial therapy, the author cites bias toward individual demons, errors in comparing financial problems of the rich to those of average and poor Americans, and “a dysfunctional relationship with class, specifically the lack of class mobility in a country that prides itself on the American Dream.” This thought-provoking book alerts us to important issues in today’s postrecession economy and thus will enlighten many library patrons. --Mary Whaley

Review
“It's rare to come across a realistic and readable book about personal finance. Most are laden with rosy promises, followed by acronyms and turgid advice. Helaine Olen, a freelance journalist, offers an exception with Pound Foolish.... It’s a take-no-prisoners examination of the ways she says we have been scared, misled or bamboozled by those purporting to help us achieve financial security.”
—The New York Times

“Have you ever met anyone who has grown rich just by saving? Probably not. But you may well have met someone who has grown rich looking after other people’s savings. That dark secret lies at the heart of ‘Pound Foolish’, Helaine Olen’s excellent book, a contemptuous expos of the American personal-finance industry.”
—The Economist

“A cautionary tale that you need to read.”
—The Washington Post

“Dishy dirt on the ‘financialization’ of American life and the hordes of carrion-pickers who swarm us in the hope of lifting still more dollars from our pockets.”
—Kirkus

“This thought-provoking book alerts us to important issues in today’s post-recession economy.”
—Booklist

“A highly readable antidote to the snake oil of the personal finance industry. Suze Orman, watch out!”

—GREG CRITSER, author of Fat Land

“Wow, does personal financial advice need debunking. And Helaine Olen does it like an old master. Clear, witty, takes no prisoners, and right as hell. Olen will wake you up. There is no financial trick to make you rich.”

—JEFF MADRICK, author of The Age of Greed and senior fellow at the Roosevelt Institute

“Helaine Olen explains in simple language why most Americans are never going to understand the myriad complexities of investing and borrowing, leaving us all vulnerable to being ripped off in oh so many ways. Combining thorough research with passionate writing, Pound Foolish tells us what to do to protect ourselves and our hard-earned money.”

—DAVID CAY JOHNSTON, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Fine Print

“As Helaine Olen shows in this powerful expos, ‘personal finance’ is the ultimate oxymoron. The financial challenges that most Americans face are not simply personal—they reflect the failure of our polices and our leaders to tackle growing middle-class insecurity. And the advice that self-proclaimed money experts provide is far from sound finance. Too often, it’s snake oil that only adds to the problem.”

—JACOB S. HACKER, director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies, Yale University, and author of The Great Risk Shift

“Pound Foolish is a fabulously well-reported, lucid, and witty tour of the train wreck that American finance has become. Olen has the rare ability to demystify the countless swindles and frauds that lately comprise the basic operations of the investment scene. As a kind of bonus, she depicts with verve and intelligence the panoramic freak show of personalities who infest the money scene.”

—JAMES HOWARD KUNSTLER, author of The Geography of Nowhere and Too Much Magic

“In this gripping account, Helaine Olen pulls out the rug from under the finance industry, and does so in time for at least some of us to find alternative solutions to financial security.”

—DOUGLAS RUSHKOFF, author of Life Inc. and Present Shock

“The world of personal finance is an economic sideshow filled with illusionists, conjurers, and snake-oil salesmen of every stripe. Thankfully, Helaine Olen has spent enough time inside the circus to be able to guide us wisely and wittily through the hall of mirrors—and come out smarter on the other end.”

—JAMES LEDBETTER, opinion editor, Reuters, and author of Unwarranted Influence

“The cult of ‘personal finance’ sells itself—and preys on pocketbooks—with a wildly false message: that American middle class families only have themselves to blame for their economic troubles. With wit, simple math, and relentless sleuthing, Helaine Olen shows how the personal finance industry has led savers and investors astray, and what you can do to avoid its traps.”

—ALYSSA KATZ, author of Our Lot

Loved this book. Gave it a four star because of attacks on Millionaire Next Door.
By Steve Schullo
Book Review of "Pound Foolish" by Helaine Olen.
I eagerly anticipated reading "Pound Foolish." It's right down my alley--another critique of the personal finance industry's dirty underwear and how this industry looks out for their best interests over our own. I was in heaven! I love these types of books. More needs to be written. I listened to her interview on a podcast and loved what she had to say about the financial industry and bought the book right away.

She talked about many of the gurus we all know: David Bach, Robert Kiyosaki, Suze Orman, Dave Ramsey. Olen points out that they say some of the right financial ideas to their followers while subtly encouraging spending and the wrong financial ideas through their endorsements and expensive follow-up classes (e.g., how to buy real estate with no money down, etc).
After all that has happened in the past decade, none of this should surprise us. For us regular folks, it is hard to imagine why for example, Suze Orman, who is worth $30 million, as Olen reports, and yet endorses a credit card company! And Orman started telling people about buying new cars. Why? According to Olen, when you have as big an ego as these gurus have, you only want to get bigger and richer. IMO, we have something that these gurus don't: we have "enough!" (Quoted in the introduction of John Bogle's book, "Enough").

The critique doesn't stop with the well know gurus. The author brought out the conflicts of interest by the boatload covering the entire financial industry. And there are plenty! Some I had not thought about. She covers many topics such as the financial literacy programs supported by banks. This was new to me. I was wondering how a positive topic as financial literacy programs could be a conflict of interest. The ah-ah came to me instantly: these same banks turn around and offer credit cards to clients with over-the-top credit terms and higher interest rates. Literacy "programs" apparently are paid for by the folks who pay higher interest rates so the risk in offering these positive image programs is borne by the customers whether or not they took a class. Is this is an example of moral hazard or just a response to a regulation that if you serve poor people, a bank must offer literacy programs? Then we wonder why so many of these literacy programs fail--the financial industry uses literacy programs to promote their business! And what is that business? Borrow and spend, of course. Now I get it. Duh!

Olen believes that the support for student programs, Junior Achievement and Jump$start, provide the brand name introduction of the big banks to teens. As a teacher, I have used both of these programs and have noticed the big bank ads all over their brochures. One solution that I always mentioned to my students is to use your local credit union. (As a side point, I never liked the Stock Market Game as it showed students how to compete and gamble as a game by winning or losing, rather than provide long term genuine saving and investing strategies. Investing is serious business--not a game at all!)

She also berates the financial information offered on many of the financial media giants 24/7. I loved Olen's description of Jim Cramer-- his frat-boy mentality, his testosterone bloated antics with the back drop of tacky sound effects initiated by huge buttons. What a show! Yet, millions watch that trash--it's highly rated since 2005. Cramer blew it big time with his support of Bear Sterns. How about his investment advice? Sure, invest in four or five individual companies in different industries and you have diversification! I KID YOU NOT!

I devoured Olen treatise like a kid with five dollars burning a hole in my pocket when walking around a candy store. However, my sweet tooth turned sour when she dragged in good people--authors that have successfully offered us regular folks objective financial information. For example I could NOT understand why she attacked the good authors of the "Millionaire Next Door" and "The Millionaire Mind" and their motives. She condemned the Millionaire Next Door author's profile of the American wealthy implying a disservice to readers that all you have to do to become a millionaire is to start your own business. Huh?

I read those books. Both are great--every American should read them. Millionaire Next Door and Millionaire Mind authors reported that the living habits of America's millionaires are available to all of us who have a modicum of discipline and can rely on our everyday common sense. American millionaires built wealth slowly by living frugally, sending their precious little ones to public schools, paying off debts quickly, saving and investing regularly, driving old cars and trucks for years and dining at home in their dungarees. Even Warren Buffet proudly announced in an interview in Time Magazine that "no Buffett in Omaha has ever attended private schools." Ben Franklin said two centuries ago "spend less than you earn."

My husband and I have never owned a business. We worked as public school teachers and yet achieved millionaire status through the good ideas found in the "Millionaire Next Door." Americans would still be surprised to learn that the average American millionaire is not, and never has been, the limo-chauffeured, tuxedo-wearing, patent superficial, mansion living, martini-guzzling, nitwit inebriate with the Gatsby values and physical attractiveness on their way to the Hamptons.

Along with the idea of reducing spending, she distorted that "latte millionaire idea" offered by David Bach by implying that you don't save a million by giving up lattes. Of course, any fool knows that and she accurately pointed out Bach's erroneous statistics. But statistics are beside the point--it's an attitude of spending that makes the difference. If people spend frivolously on lattes, they will probably spend frivolously on new cars, big houses, private schools from preschool through college, the latest fashion, expensive cosmetics, etc. The latte habit is only a point to look at your daily spending and how maintaining the image of "looking rich" damages your financial status while enduring needless stress of trying to keep up with the Joneses.

I agree with the other reviewers who report that she left out solutions. But that was not the intention of this book! The subtitle is very clear: "Exposing the Dark Side of the Personal Financial Industry." I don't begrudge the author when there are so many negative financial issues that we consumers need to know and address--high costs that are hidden, conflicts of interests, "safe" retirement products that don't keep up with inflation. I agree with the author's intentions of "exposing the dark side" 100%.

If you want solutions to address the conflicts of interest of the financial industry, you need to read elsewhere. And there are plenty of books that offer solutions: John Bogle's books or the books by his followers, Ferri, Swedroe, Roth, Burns, Bernstein and the Bogleheads. John Bogle passive investing strategy and low costs bypass all of the Wall Street shenanigans that Olen accurately points out and learning this simple strategy address financial literacy 100%. This alone does require more regulations, although, I am not totally against more regulations to demand more transparency.

I highly recommend the book with four stars, despite some distortion of the latte idea of reducing spending and attacks on the Millionaire Next Door authors.

Ms. Olen reviews some of the leading figures in personal finance and trashes most of them, sometimes with good reason. Her reviews of efforts of Suze Orman and the Rich Dad, Poor Dad guy to tie in other products with their seminars are revealing, as are her summaries of the tactics aimed at selling annuities to the elderly. I think, however, that she is too dismissive of Dave Ramsey: for example, she criticizes his Debt Snowball approach by simply saying that interest rates matter, then on the same page cites a study that offers some support for Ramsey's approach. Yes, interest rates matter but so does resolve, and that is what Ramsey emphasizes with his approach. Another deficient review in this book is that of David Bach and his connecton of lattes to bad financial health. Olen counters that stagnant incomes and rising costs of housing, health care, and education are responsbile for poor household financial health. She is right to mention these factors, but I think Bach's point is that frivolities like lattes, iPhones, expensive cable plans, etc. eat up a lot of what could go into savings, as does buying more house than is needed.

The only figure who appears in this book without snarky commentary is Teresa Ghilarducci, a noted 401(k) skeptic who wants to replace 401(k)s with Guaranteed Retirement Acounts - guaranteed by the same government that brought us the Social Security Trust Fund. Olen also approvingly mentions a California law that ostensibly provides retirement security, courtesy of that state government, but she neglects to mention that the California government faces its own massive pension crisis.

It's not a bad book if you read it knowing that Olen is biased. Get a used copy.

Must-Read Book More Relevant Today then Ever!
By Nomi M. Prins
With the market at record highs (again), ordinary Americans continue to get bombarded with messages, “experts” and various business shows urging them to enter the investing ‘game’, if they have not already done so, or else they will miss out on all this euphoric upside.

The problem with that is - as Helaine Olen expertly reveals in Pound Foolish with a compelling and authoritative mix of facts, figures and anecdotes from real people - that there is almost no way an ordinary citizen -- or anyone advising him or her -- is going to outsmart the market. Even on the occasional off chance that the stars all align in that regard, the person “beating” the market is more likely to be trading from a yacht on the tax free seas, than sharing secrets in a seminar, or on CNBC. The self-proclaimed aficionados of personal finance bestowing their pearls of wisdom to the general population are therefore gross manifestations of the problem.

Since no individual can control his or her financial destiny against a backdrop of far bigger players, the idea that he or she is responsible for related pitfalls is a fallacy that ignores the actualities of today’s financial environment.

The reality, as Olen points out, is that there are broader issues affecting people’s financial lives. These aren’t fixed by foregoing that regular morning latte. Disposable incomes of individuals have drastically lagged the profits of the financial industry and many of the financial-self-help gurus that profit from the disparity in policies, and subsidies that the larger players in the market place are awarded, as average citizens are repeatedly shafted. The brilliant take-away from Olen’s must-read book is that wariness of get-rich-quick schemes is an important ingredient toward preserving economic stability, but more than that, we need stricter regulations on all aspects of an industry that controls our savings, retirement and every element of our economic future.

Solid Continuation to the Series
By Liquid Frost
Enslaved (The Last Orphans Book 3) picks up right where Book 2 left off. If you haven't read the series from the start - The Last Orphans kindly navigate away as there will be spoilers below.

SERIES RECAP

This YA series is Sci-Fi/Apocalyptic with clean language, but plenty of violence. The first book has a gang-rape scene to set the destructive mood, but that device is only used once in the series thus far. It transitions into a character-driven adventure.

A recap: Something strange happened on Earth as animals turned against their owners and adults were targeted in violent fashion. This "power" killing adults is invisible, doesn't smell, and only attacks when the time is right. In short order, the entire adult population is wiped clean and children are all that is left of humanity. Teens and Tweens are now filling parental roles for younger siblings as well as orphans found.

Shane Tucker, a child of sixteen, quickly finds himself on search and rescue; locating and leading other survivors to safety. He finds Kelly Douglas, his classmate, and together they band together with a rag-tag group of kids searching for answers.

Their quest takes them to Atlanta, where other teen-driven factions control territory as they begin to fight for control of resources. It is here that answers are found and new alliances are made.

The Harvest, Book 2 picks up the story as if the reader hit pause after concluding The Last Orphans. The machine that killed adults is destroyed, but the fight for survival takes on a whole new meaning. Alien technology can be a bitch. Luckily for Shane's group, a rebel faction gathers them up for enhanced training in attempts to thwart Earth's alien take-over.

Now stationed on a remote base, groups of teens from around the world train for a suicide mission - destroy the alien fleet and rebuild Earth. I'll stop the recap here - Book 2 has plenty of action with an epic battle at the end. It is, by far, the largest cliffhanger of all three books.

Okay - Book Three

The alien race isn't so alien to humans. In fact, we are part them - modified to be their slaves long ago. Members of the core group targeting the alien fleet are captured and assimilated (almost) into their army. They are slaves to the master, but maintain their thoughts. Unfortunately, they can't act as they aren't in control of their bodies. Talk about a nightmare!

Others escaped and are working their way back to base to regroup - it is a journey with roadblocks and I'll not give away the story.

There isn't as much action in this round - more character based chapters. I found the book extremely quick to read, but was getting a little burned on the Shane and Kelly remote love-fest. We get it! It does conclude on a positive note - but yet another group enters the story and dramatically changes the game. Although it is a cliff-hanger ending, it feels more conclusive vs. Book 2. Readers can take a breath, relax a bit, and pick up Book 4 when it becomes available without too much revisiting.

The author provided an advance copy for review. I completed this book December 23, 2015.

It's when you have a good book in your hands
By Casia P. Courtier
I received a copy of Enslaved from the author, N.W. Harris, for an honest review. The story was my compensation. Nothing else.

You know that feeling. I know you do. It's when you have a good book in your hands. You have followed these characters in two previous books which seemed to go too fast. So, you decide to take your time with the third. Except, the only way to take your time is to just stop reading for a few days. Know what I mean? I thought you did.

Well, that's how it's been for me with Enslaved. Enslaved, is the third installment to a young adult scifi series. The first book was The Last Orphans followed by The Harvest. The story follows a group of teens from a small town who have been fighting for their lives since the first chapter of the first book. There never seems to be a break for the teens, or the reader.

If you've read my previous reviews, you would have heard me say that this series has given me a form of literary ptsd. As messed up as this sounds, that's the only way I can describe this experience. I love these kids. I feel like I've been fighting alongside them from the get go. I have an actual emotional reaction to these characters (something that only a few books achieved). I want them to survive and thrive.

It's because of that that I couldn't tell N.W. Harris no. I had to know what happened.

Enslaved starts where The Harvest ends: with a separation of the team (can't go into detail in case you haven't read it yet... READ IT!). This book is written a tad bit differently than the others. We get to see how the antagonists live, how the enslavement works and feels, and the actions of the main team.

I like that Harris did that. It's important because it gives the reader a base of who we are up against. Yes, we. I am with the kids. Anyways, through the lens of the Annunaki, we see what they are really like. And, they are exactly what I thought (with the exception of other Annunaki who have more going for them). These people are like the Roman Empire. I can see a direct comparison, and yet, there is a slight difference that makes them their own.

The second view is from one of the enslaved kids from the main team (so hard not to give it away!). Can I say body snatchers? Or perhaps Host? It has that feel like the movie Host (yes, I know it's a book. Haven't read it yet.). The teen who is enslaved is conscious. She is there, but she has no control. It's like being in a coma only you can hear and see everything. But you have no control with your heartbeat. No control of your breathing. You can't even blink. You are in a prison.

It's probably the most scary thing that could come from this series. And that's pushing it because I was upset with the first book (God, it's good!). There are only a few things that truly scare me. The imagery of the enslavement is definitely one of them.

Now, I don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say that N.W. Harris ends the book with another cliffhanger. UGH! It is both a curse and a blessing. I don't want the series to end, but I do (in a "I want my kids safe and happy" way). Alas, I will have to wait for the next book.

I can't wait!

An Amazing Book
By Larena Hubble

Shane and his friends managed to survive the first major attack against the enemy. They destroyed the alien ships that came to harvest the children of Earth and turn them into slaves. The ship that Kelly was on is the one ship that managed to escape. Shane is determined to do whatever it takes to save Kelly but if he turns his back on his friends he takes the chance of jeopardizing the whole mission.

Kelly’s mind is invaded by the enemy and she is turned into a slave soldier. Any order they give her she will follow even if that order is to kill her friends, her little sister and Shane. As Kelly performs heinous tasks under the directions of her new masters she is trapped and helpless in her own body. With each new direction her sanity and desire to live fade a little more.

Shane is ready to make a rescue attempt as soon as he is home. When he finally gets there it is to find that Kelly is there too commanding an army of human slave soldier and she is determined to make him join her ranks. Now Shane has to see if he can rescue Kelly before she gets to her sister or Kelly just might end up helping enslave the rest of humanity.

This is proving to be a very additive series. With each book the series gets better and better. While readers will be thrilled to find out there is to be another book they will end up disappointed to find out they have to wait for it. The action is pretty much non-stop and makes for a book that readers won’t want to put down for any reason. It is also a series that stays with readers long after they finish each book. It will be interesting to see just where the series ends up and how it gets there. The characters are very well written and move the story along very well. This is definitely one series that should be read.

BEST GRE BOOK EVER!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
    By Ivo Stanchev Ivanoff
This is the MOST EXTENSIVE GRE vocab list I have ever found and, trust me, I have searched a lot since my goal is a PHD program in English at a top-notch university. If you learn these words you will need no more than 5 minutes to complete the vocab questions on the GRE which leaves you with 25 min for the reading comprehension questions. And this is quite auspicious/propitious (check your GRE vocab!) for your verbal score. You need to study though! Do not think that skimming over these words once or twice will magically bestow brilliant vocab skills on you. Therefore, as others have pointed out, you need to give yourself at least a month to prepare.
Either way, if you do not have at least a month ahead of you, how high of a score are you actually expecting to get? When someone tells me they have just a few weeks to study, I already know they are not being serious enough about their grad school application. Such students are bound to get mediocre results and will eventually end up in a mediocre program, probably with little funding and lots of TA stints that will tremendously hinder their research, possibly procrastinate their grad studies, and protract their dissertation project. Yes, the repercussions of a mediocre GRE score can be deleterious (another one from the list!) to your overall grad school experience and professional performance in life!
So if you are up for mediocre preparation and mediocre results, better save yourself the money, go to the library, and get one of the standard GRE prep books with about 200 words. THIS BOOK IS FOR SERIOUS STUDENTS WITH SERIOUS INTENTIONS!!
What I MOST like about it is the MP3 files because you can listen to them any time any place. Just upload them to your I phone, I pad, or MP3 player and listen to them when you are walking to/from campus, going to/from work (even at work!), or just shopping, or working out at the gym! Every minute you listen to these words they get imbedded in your brain which is a much more effective way of memorizing than going over a list of words only when you are at home, at a desk, etc.
So do not hesitate! If you are serious about your GRE score, seriously invest in yourself by buying this book!
