This book is a college-level introductory textbook in Christian ethics. This statement indicates three important facts. First, the book is based on the Christian faith and is written for people who stand within that faith. The text recognizes as viable options a number of other systems and indeed, because of their significance, describes some of them briefly without attempting to assess their strengths and weaknesses. Yet this book is an effort to state a Christian ethic—a Christian method of making moral decisions. It makes certain assumptions, which are proper subjects of debate in Christian theological discussion, that reflect the theology of Protestant Christianity. Although in the field of ethics there is a significant mutual influence between Protestant and Catholic thinkers, there are also significant differences. At many points, therefore, my own Protestantism is clearly revealed.

Second, this is an introductory textbook. It is intended to acquaint beginning students with both the field of ethics in general and varieties of Christian ethical systems in particular and to assist them in formulating an approach that they will find valid for themselves. It is further intended to help them consider from a Christian perspective a wide variety of ethical issues, both personal and social, with which modern men and women must deal.

Third, this text is written for college students and is designed to help them develop a method of dealing with the thorny moral issues that they face not only as students but also as people involved in the life of the broader community. It does not, therefore, assume either the experience or the preparation of students at the graduate level.

The plan of the book is clearly indicated in the part and chapter titles. Part I (Chapters 1 through 3) introduces the field of ethics and a variety of approaches to its study. Part II (Chapters 4 through 6) describes my own method for making ethical decisions. Part III (Chapters 7 through 15) deals with some of the issues that demand attention today. No attempt is made to draw a line between "personal" and "social" issues because most issues have both personal and social implications, and the two aspects are therefore considered together.

To assist the students, I have prepared a glossary of unusual terms and common terms that are given a distinct meaning in the study of Christian ethics. The first time those words are used in the text they appear in boldface. All quotations of scripture are taken from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

I am grateful to Meredith College for the sabbatical that enabled me to complete the major portion of the actual writing of the first edition of this book. I am deeply indebted to three long-time colleagues at Meredith College, B. H. Cochran, Allen Page, and Bob Vance, for continuing discussion and debate, the fruits of which are reflected in much of what I have written. I am further indebted to the students who have taken my course in Christian ethics and have criticized this work in both oral and written form. Hugh T. McElwain at Rosary College, Dean M. Understandable Ethics

Crook is an excellent read. His first chapter tended to drag, overviews do not seem to be his strength. But keep on reading - the remainder of the book is insightful and follows in a logical progression. Beware: Crook is very up to date in his thinking on topics that may bother some, e.g., homosexuality. He includes what science has contributed to ethical understanding in his explanations. Some may not like the facts getting in the way of their ethical standards.
This is so well written that I use the book for meditation topics.

The author appears to suffer form a great degree of confusion

I just finished re-reading my 2nd edition that I used for a college course in the 90's. The author appears to suffer form a great degree of confusion. He claims in the Preface that the book is "intended to help them consider from a Christian perspective a wind variety of ethical issues...", but he is quite directive in is his assertions on many issues. He makes many assertions that are not backed up with any data or references. He holds conflicting positions on issues discussed in separate chapters. He makes claims that are patently false and uses them to support his ethical positions, which puts all of his assertions, perspectives, etc. into question.

The only positive aspect of this book is that it helped me to think through some issues on a deeper level. Much of the time I found myself in strong disagreement with his position, and his interpretation of Scripture and it's application to moral issues of our time.

A Primer on Compromise

Mr Crook, ironic name, has written a "Christian" ethics book that dismisses what the Christian Bible teaches. How can this be so?
He bases some of his premises on new scientific evidence, yet doesn't cite any! Why? Because there is no valid scientific evidence that supports his beliefs. He does however, relate his own un-scientic, un-documented findings! Is this a textbook with facts? Absolutely not! It is one mans opinion, based on his liberal theology and secularism. It's going in the trash!

I read this for Environmental Science

Best Part: The best part of An Inconvenient truth is the ending. Al Gore brings up the point that earth is our only home, and we must take care of it. He encourages the fact that you can preserve the health of our planet so that it will remain beautiful for generations and centuries to come.

Most Interesting: One of the most interesting parts of this book is the side effects that technology has on the Earth. There are also some improvements that technology has made. One of them being that it has improved people’s lives in many ways. “A hundred and fifty years ago, before the invention of the electric lightbulb, the world at night was dark”. Was It A Good Book: Yes, This book was an interesting book because it was filled with many interesting facts about global warming and the impact humans have made on the planet. Al Gore who was Bill Clintons vice president narrates the book and the movie. He talked about his personal experiences with the change in today’s society and how it affects the world around him and also about his travels and understanding of the changes being made to the atmosphere.

Everyone should read this whether they like Gore or not.

This is a very thick paperback. I got a little disgusted knowing I needed to read this for Conservation class. But when I got into the book and discovered what was happening to the air around me it got me thinking. Everyone should read this book. It is informative even if you don't believe what Gore says. It's reading that makes you think and sometimes worry. After taking this class, I'm more concerned about the environment we live in and try to recycle everything I use today.

Buy the DVD and the BOOK

Al Gore is doing humanity a huge favor by forcing domestic policy focus on the political issue of global warming and climate change. The multiple book font type and illistrations are, in my opinion, distracting and unusual. Then on the other hand, the topic of climate change is unusual. The DVD video is, in my view, a much more powerful product. The message is essential to understand not only from the damage being imposed on the atmospheric global commons but the damage being imposed on the American economy as the European Union (EU) and 166 nation signatories begin to act upon the Kyoto Protocols -- the protocol actually advanced by the US Government from the onset of the Framework on Climate Change. The book and DVD are powerful introductions to the study of climate change by the non-scientist. The real SCARE comes after digging into the real science of climate change. The so-called 'junk science' is produced by those seeking to mask the need for change. I would recommend several books on the European Emissions Trading Scheme and how the carbon trade is operating in Europe as a means to understanding the future of climate policy after the Al Gore book and DVD introductions to the issue. The carbon market exchange will be a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States post-2010. This book can serve to understand why the carbon market will be of such significance in the future.

Not as good as the first edition

The first edition of Martin and Barkley(1961)was a tremendously useful volume and this newer edition is simply a reprint. The main problem with it (and reason for only four stars) is the photo quality is very poor compared to the original. I've made photocopies of the original that look better than those in the current edition. I was dissapointed by that, however, the book stands alone as there are really no other references like it. If you can obtain the earlier edition at a reasonable price I'd recomend that you get it, but if you can't this adequate.

God is creative, and we are creative. That's the premise of Unity minister Butterworth's straightforward and inspiring guide to living a creative life. Although he uses the Genesis account as the book's organizing principle (his seven steps parallel the seven days of creation and rest), this is not a particularly Jewish or Christian book. Rather, Butterworth draws on teachings both Transcendentalist and New Age God is creativity, God is us, God is in us, etc. On the first day of creation, God said, "Let there be light," and Butterworth claims that seeking the inner light is likewise the first step in developing a creative self. He also dwells on the phrase "Let there be," suggesting that readers should take that phrase as their motto: "No suggestion of effort, no strain, no hurry... just let." The overall premise of the book is very, well, creative; Butterworth's use of the creation account in Genesis as a template for human creativity is surprisingly compelling. The exercises he includes at the end of each chapter, however, disappoint. Butterworth urges the newly creative to take a 10-minute breather in the park each week, for example, and to make a written list of their greatest disappointments in life. Such suggestions are predictable and virtually indistinguishable from those in many other self-help book. Still, on the whole this guide will speak to those who want to live a more intentionally creative and spiritual life.

Butterworth, a Unity minister, has one main premise: that God is in all of us and that all that is creative can be tapped as long as we open ourselves to that Godhead. For his latest book, whose spiritualese some readers may find grating, he has divided his thesis into seven working points corresponding to the seven days of creation. Butterworth explains each day's inspirational meaning and offers a series of exercises to help readers release the creativity associated with it. Although somewhat Christian, Butterworth's contentions will not be embraced by the fundamentalist crowd. He avers, for instance, that the creation story is an allegory, and he specifically separates Jesus from Christ, positing that Christ is actually a part of all of us and that Jesus was just more able than most people to find the Christ within. Appropriate for public libraries whose patrons want to understand the connection between spirituality and creativity.

Small Book, Huge Message

I loved THE CREATIVE LIFE by Eric Butterworth. I've been a long-time student of his books, and my favorites are DISCOVER THE POWER WITHIN YOU and SPIRITUAL ECONOMICS. I think THE CREATIVE LIFE is nearly as good as those two. This book is based around the seven keys that will release our creative genius within. Each chapter includes practical exercises to put these ideas into practice in everyday life. This book is small (just over 150 pages), but the ideas in it are huge. By putting these concepts to work in my life, I'm already seeing results. Highly recommended to everyone who has loved any of Mr. Butterworth's previous books, as well as readers new to his work.

Positive Thinking About Creativity with a Biblical Metaphor

Summary: The Creative Life captures many valuable dimensions of improving creativity. The book's metaphor to the seven days of creation in Genesis will excite much controversy among those who read this material differently that will detract from a focus on improving human creativity. The book's basic message is that God creates the potential for all things to exist, but many of them require co-creation by people to come into physical existence. " . . . [Y]ou are no less creative than God Himself."
Review: The book is built around the metaphor of the seven days of creation in Genesis. The basic reading of that part of the Bible is also done in a literary rather than a literal way. Each chapter builds around one day of creation, and ties the lessons back to human creativity. Many helpful submetaphors are contained in each chapter, such as to the combining of minds on the Internet.
"Like God, our creative powers are infinite," says Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo in his introduction. The book isn't quite that strong. It basically argues that the unfilled potential that God has created can all be tapped by humans.
"Let There Be Light." This text is seen as an encouragement to look for inner illumination for the right path. "Love . . . is what we are." "Love is the awareness of light and you naturally project light in a kind of healing influence."
"Let There Be Firmament." "To the person with an unshakeable faith that something wonderful is going to happen, something wonderful is happening." You have to believe in the potential before your mind can take it seriously.
"Let the Dry Land Appear." " . . . [T]he dry land is the mental image of formed thoughts." You need to "see what can be." You are encouraged to create visionary views of what could be in practical detail. I thought that this section worked best of all those in the book.
"Let There Be Two Great Lights." "God can only will the full expression of your powers and capacities." This argument seems convoluted, rather than expressive to me. God can do anything. Any existing limits in humans can be changed by God.
I suspect that many readers, if they are like me, will find this book coming close to arguing that each human's relationship to God is closer to being a peer one than many believe. Sections like this one create that issue. I found all this exhaltation of humans relative to God to be unnecessary to improving personal creativity. The language quoted in this book from the New Testament rightly emphasizes that Jesus pointed out that His ways are open to us.
The best parts of the book are the submetaphors. For example, in coming into contact with your on intuition, you are encouraged to think about the light within as being able to be influenced by a rheostat or a radio tuner. Then, there are exercises to use those metaphors to inspire more creativity. Based on my work with hypnosis and creativity, these are exceptionally fine metaphors and superb directions for using them.
If you find the Genesis metaphor gets in your way (as I suspect it will for many), my suggestion is that you skip over those parts when you get to them. You will still find much solid information here about being more creative. For example, the material in the chapter on "Let the Dry Land Appear" is very similar to that in Think and Grow Rich, and will provide new perspective on those ideas for people who have enjoyed that fine book.
The exercises in each chapter are well worth doing, and you would get almost all of the benefit possible from this book if you simply did them. So if you read the book, be sure to take the time to do the exercises.
A fundamental flaw in the book is to act as though the reader lacks basic experience in being creative. In fact, almost everyone has been very creative many times in her or his life. The material here would have been much more helpful if it had built more on those successful experiences.
After you finish the book, think back to those times when you have been most creative. What did they have in common? Do you routinely try to recreate those circumstances? How can the elements that worked well be combined in new ways?
Aspire to perfection in some important area . . . and you may approach it closer than anyone has ever done before! Be sure to leave a map to follow your journey though, when you take that route.

Great New Perspective

I loved this book, and Eric Butterworth, a Unity minister, has become a favorite author. If you enjoy concepts related to Law of Attraction and creating your own reality, and if your take on the Bible is not literal, this may well be the best book you've read on these topics. But if you are very traditional about all things biblical, you'll probably want to skip this one.
