The various contributions to the partition function (translation, rotation, vibration, electronic) are explored and derived. The book ends with a chapter in which all the concepts are brought together in the calculation of equilibrium constants for reactions between ideal gases. A number of fully worked examples are included, making this an invaluable aid to undergraduate chemistry, physics, chemical engineering and materials science courses. Postgraduate biochemists and molecular biologists will also find this book useful.

I'm conflicted

Maczek presents here a short invitation to statistical chemical thermodynamics, showing how the partition functions due to various degrees of freedom of a molecule can be used to calculate thermodynamic properties and to predict the positions of chemical equilibria. It has some quirks, and whether or not it is a worthwhile purchase seems like an individual decision.

First the good things. Maczek's primer is succinct, delivering ideas in bite-sized chunks, almost like an outline or set of lecture notes. Thus, it does not stretch the reader's attention span too much. Its overall brevity also enables one to read the entire book in a short period of time and have a reasonable taste of statistical thermodynamics. The parts of the book I enjoyed the most were the case studies on simple applications, which Maczek wove into the book as interstitial chapters between presentations of various partition functions. He used two-level theory to explain the Schottky anomaly in the heat capacity of solids and delivered a nice explanation of ortho- and para-hydrogen along with the rotational partition function. These chapters were gems, short but very satsisfying illustrations of the power of the theory.

On the other hand, the book is quite limited. Its main caveat is that it assumes a full knowledge of classical thermodynamics, which I did not have when I read the book. To follow the treatment, one also needs a knowledge of basic quantum mechanics. When showing how all classical thermodynamic quantities can be written in terms of the canonical partition function, it pulls sophisticated formulae from classical thermodynamics out of thin air, making the derivations look like a collection of silly tricks involving partial derivatives. The treatment of the theory is quite superficial; for example, the absolutely fundamental derivation of the most probable statistical distribution and its predominance at equilibrium are omitted. So is any discussion of Boltzmann's statistical view of entropy. Finally, the book is a bit expensive for my tastes (it's cheap compared to other science textbooks, but remember that it is a 90-page paperback that goes by quickly and which has only limited value as a reference).

These drawbacks are probably symptoms of a deliberate effort to keep the book short and simple. For a student wanting to learn and understand statistical thermodynamics in any depth, Maczek would break the ice, but it cannot be the only book in this effort (to his credit, Maczek admits this). It was a nice read and a manageable introduction, but I wonder whether it is more efficient simply to start with a more substantial book.

A book on Electroheat - Worth a place on your desk

If you are interested in the many ways of delivering electroheat this book is well worth a place on your desk. It is based on courses on electroheat given in the engineering dept of Cambridge University UK where Metaxas is a Fellow of St John's College. Here he combines mathematical treatment of the principles of electroheat with descriptions and sketches of a wide variety of industrial applications. He graciously acknowledges his debt to the many colleagues who have devoted their careers to the subject and quotes sources both in the text then in a reference list covering five pages in section 9.11.
This book is rich in graphs, illustrations and diagrams of processes. These are all black and white, clear, concise and free from the kind of costly artistic glitz that often preempts substance.
Metaxas provides a searching analytical treatment of the modes of heat generation and distribution in various materials when subjected to electromagnetic fields. The materials can be conductors, insulators or anything in between. He demonstrates that one compact mathematics and physics toolbox can bring understanding and an ability to handle a diverse range of applications. This is what brings "Unified Approach" into the title.
In the section on properties of materials Metaxas begins " The prime purpose of utilizing electrical energy in the processes considered in this book is either to elevate the temperature to effect annealing, curing, sterilizing or melting, to supply the necessary energy for drying as in dielectric or infra-red heating techniques, to provide sufficient energy for welding or cutting materials or to promote plasmas for a number of important industrial applications."
He describes and gives values for the properties of materials relevant to the heating process. These include electrical and thermal conductivity, specific heat, permittivity, dielectric loss, their dependence on temperature.
He shows many worked examples and calculations of induction heating in metals and dielectric heating in non-metals.
There is a section on applicators for electromagnetic heating. This includes:
Clamps for connecting ac power directly onto a metal rod for ohmic ( I�R ) heating.
The three-phase immersed electrode set up for ohmic heating in an electrode boiler or molten glass tank.
Various shapes of copper coils for induction heating of metal, covering parts and continuous profile.
Magnetic yoke designs for transverse flux, improving electromagnetic coupling for thin strip.
Parallel plate arrangements for applying HF electric fields to lossy dielectric materials.
Clamping applicators for HF welding of PVC.
Microwave traveling wave applicator for sheet material.
Microwave horn applicator for heating material in a conveyer tunnel.
This same section covers power sources downstream of the 50 or 60Hz public
supply. This section concerns conversion and control, stopping short of automatic feedback control. A book on control that complements this one is waiting for an author.
The silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is shown, first as a simple modulator of ac power, then as a controller of the rectifier providing the high-voltage dc supply to a magnetron, then as a rectifier/inverter circuit for delivering medium frequency power to induction heaters.
50 and 60Hz three-phase transformers in saturated-core mode are featured, connected as frequency triplers.
Thermionic tube and solid-state amplifying and switching devices are shown in various oscillator circuits.
For microwave power generation the magnetron is described in some detail, along with its high voltage dc supplies.
Chapter 5 covers the ionized state of a plasma; described by Metaxas as "a state of gaseous material which contains a fair number of ionized particles resulting from the application of an external energy source"....... "may be in the form of dc or ac voltages of frequencies up to the microwave region and beyond"
Three regions of the plasma's voltage/current curve are defined, with their relevance to industrial processing:
Normal glow - about 0.1 to some 50mA, being energy sources for the CO2 laser, plasma chemistry and surface treatments, e.g. etching, assisted chemical and physical vapor depositions, ion implantation, oxidation and sputtering.

Excellent instructions for italic handwriting

Excellent instructions for italic writing. Interesting methods of teaching that drill in the principles without being repetitive or boring. Beautiful illustration, plenty of room for practice, good guide sheets. I prefer this over the book "write now" or "italic lettering." Good organized sequential projects that give consistent practice of principles taught. I find it useful to go back and review every so often and almost find something I didn't catch the first time. I would recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn italic handwriting.

A Master's Master ... Available again. There is still joy in this world...

I first encountered this book when I started teaching calligraphy in the late 80's and 90's. I had never until then seen such a brilliant approach to the italic hand for the learner and perhaps even more for the teacher. Prior to my exposure to this book I had learned and taught calligraphy as an art form. When I first learned italic at prep school, there were a group who took an advanced art history book where the teacher, himself an italic master, insisted that his students take all their class notes and write all his exams in italic. If they used Italic in the same way for all their other classes, they got extra credit and, by the end of their senior years were masters of Italic. As most people do who get to the other side of the hill, I have many regrets -- one of the most painful being that I didn't stick up for myself and take this class. I grieved at my lack of mastery for many years, until I discovered this book. I embraced its lessons as diligently as I was able and over time, saw my italic make the kind of improvement I had previously thought impossible. A couple of times since, my ability and fluency in italic have been affected by factors such as a stroke, growing arthritis in my hands and, of necessity, more and more time spent on a computer. With each obstacle, I found a new (or at least fresh) copy of this book and happily dove into Eager's special sort of 'rehab'. then for a number of years, copies were hard to come by, even here on Amazon. But at last here it is. Oh,Joy...

Lately I've turned down a number of requests to teach because this book wasn't available and, though I've examined each training text that comes along, I remain Eager for Eager. Now that I can again get new copies, I may even take on a new class or two. Thanks so much for Reissuing thisi wonderful book!

Welcome to the world of humanistic psychology. I bought this book as a gift for a very close friend, as it has forever changed me. I too am amazed that as a clinical psychology doctoral student, this book is not a Required read in our program. If you've been considering reading about humanistic psychology or Carl Rogers and Maslow, this is the book to start with! Easy read, beautifully written, and incredibly insightful. Once you read his work, you'll be hooked.

These decrees really work!

Thirty One decrees may seem like alot, but they are short and worth the 15 minutes declaring them over your life every day! Our words are so powerful, and these decrees are full of LIFE and BLESSING. After declaring them each day for about a week, I began to feel very alive in my spirit, and things began to come into alignment in my life. And I can sense how God's angels (who perform the work of God) have been activated through these declarations to work on my behalf. This small booklet is very powerful.

Life Changing!

Great little book! Wonderful decrees that I have been declaring over myself. God has been drawing me to read this book and I wasn't even aware of it until I started reading it. So many Christians are unaware that we can create with our words and establish boundaries with the enemy by declaring God's word. I was one of them. God led me to this book exactly when I needed it! Thank you, Kevin Basconi for laying it out there so effortlessly so we can understand how it's done!
